Q: I've just returned to China. Can use 'developing country' tag for a bit longer. Forever?

I've been in Russia.  Civilized, welcoming, clean, modern.  Friendly.  Great beer, food.  Inexpensive.

China rates way down in comparison.

Hope I can figure out a way to live and work in Russia.

China sucks.  An unhygienic rip joint with acceptable (by locals) low standards.

Can anyone help me?

I'd say the tipping point will come soon.

Anyone else come back with more negativity than ever before?

Unfortunately I cannot help you finding teacher's job in Russia but when you talk about inexpensive I strongly recommend to avoid Moscow.

Certainly not cheap, especially if you are not fluent in Russian, but even then ...

Anyway if you do not mind the horrible winters would recommend you some Siberian cities as the salary there can be reasonable in comparison to cost of living - Irkutsk with its Baykal lake is great.

Generally the more North you go the better it gets financially but I find the cities like Surgut and similar unbearable - in June you can still get snow showers ...

That's why so many Chinese are leaving to go to Russia.

@Nessquick

He may or may not think that China is more developed than Russia but it's a fact.

Whoever does not believe so I suggest to spend several week or months in Russia.

Sure, people will not stare at you if this matter (just out of simple fact you look the same), food is closer to Western one (even though it's not the same exactly) but apart from that no winner.

People are very nationalistic in Russia (more than Chinese by the way), Russia is expensive in certain parts and very very poor in another.

I still like Russia and I am always happy to go there but it's certainly not better than China (unless you really cannot bear China for whatever reason but that's the different story and not necessarily the reason to blame China ...)

Good answer, Jano.  But this;  'People are very nationalistic in Russia (more than Chinese by the way)'

No, they're not.  The nationalism of Chinese people is incredibly strong.  And woebetide them if it isn't.

@Royce:

It can depend on the point of view.

I spend some time in Russia, having there a lot of friends and going there, both business and privately, frequently.

I really like Russia and especially how Russians are open and hospitable.

But do not get misled - when you involve in deeper conversation so the first thing is 'Mother Russia', then Russians, then other Slavic nations (but already as subordinate to Russians) and only then the rest of the world.

They are also incredible racists - from time to time all non white Russians in Moscow and other cities desperately seek safe place as they are frequently beaten on the street.

I however do not want to judge where is the racism bigger or smaller - I just want to point out that there is more behind the facade and a lot things can be just an impression. In Russia simply Caucasian, who does not open the mouth, is no different to average Russian ...
