Q: Let's talk about the whole passive-aggressive racism thingy

And while I have never been physically assaulted like Chinese would in some parts of the West, there is obvious systemic and social racism in China that we all experienced.

Be it the stares, people refusing to sit next to the Foreigner on the bus / subway unless no other choice, others talking to you like a retarded infant even though they know that you can speak Mandarin, behaving in a complete different fashion with their fellow Chinese than they do with you, the giggles for no other reason than you looking different, etc...

And it all seems to be becoming more prevalent in the past 2-3 years, at least in Guangdong.

Share your experiences with Chinese systemic racism.

Let's look at some exceptions, most ethnic places have great people. Some expats are oblivious to what's going on around them. Some expats stay home, take taxis everywhere and only go to expat safe spots. Other expats just don't care.

Now my question to Martian, do you walk around taking photos of other people and their kids? Does it bother you when people do it to you?

Do you walk around pointing and laughing at people and talking shit about strangers when you're standing right next to them (unprovoked)? Does it bother you when it happens to you?

I'm actually a very understanding person, I understand that people will deal with this at different levels for a variety of reasons. But to say you get what you give is complete ignorance.

Racism, what races can da lu ren claim superiority over?   Hmmm....where are PRC's bests scurrying to, Beijing?  Which university did Xi's daughter go to, Qinghua? What book did they read to learn communism, The Art of War?   LOL. No wonder they usually dare claim racial superiority in front of the Africans, Indians....etc.!  LOL

I think the word aggression describes these "people" better.  On the streets it is more likely a bunch of viscious. jealous hyenas attacking you than racists.  They attack other chinese (ethnic) all over the APAC region just the same if not worse. Regardless of race, as long as you are richer, more educated, grow up with AQI = 15 air.....and they are poor, abused, uneducated.......all of that is your fault.  Who teaches them that? Karl Marx.

This passive aggression thingy is what happens when the hyenas approach you smiling with a dagger behind them.  Malicious compliance.  They become mad as you actually enjoy the conversation. In my experience, their sequence goes like this --- implode then explode.

Perfect example, criminals targeting easy targets is not racism. Emotional outbursts during a confrontation is not the same as daily harassment. Chinese are passive aggressive because they are cowards. That's why they act tough in large groups.  As another poster pointed out, harassment is often times a prelude to violent confrontation.

No one is saying racism only exists in China, but ignoring China's racism is foolish

Well i agree that Chinese people are racist in a way that ,
If you are smart, handsome/beautiful or pretty then its okay then they will like you but if in case you are black or your skin color is dark or your features are not good so you will be fu*K*d up soon in China because these people doesn't like  average looking people.
Or either if you are benefiting them in some way so you are good to go but if not then they  would prefer to stand in the bus rather then sitting next to you as you said...

earthizen:

An upvote for telling the truth. "If you are smart, handsome/beautiful or pretty then its okay then they will like you".  Admiration, my estimate is <5%. The rest is jealous of you, Hate comes within nanoseconds, next they start looking for your jugular......

Most will still hate you for being hot looking because they are not. There is a lot of jealousy within Chinese society, between each others and also towards Foreigners. I agree with earthizen that maybe 5~10% will admire you for being handsome / pretty and the rest will hate you to death for it. Actually, I would argue that the hotter you get, the more hatred you will receive from people here. When I first came to China, I was a nerdy skinny tall guy with pointy facial features and not much going on for myself, I received no mockery of any kind. Then, I hit the gym and put up some muscle mass, started taking care of myself. Today I consider myself a 8/10 easily, I have well defined sharp muscles, the girls call me "handsurm" all the time and it's instant jealousy from the guys and older folks.

@Randomguy.  One mainland trader (not a friend) taught me this trick that worked extremely well ---- don't make eye contact with them (strangers).  This is contrary to what educated, civilised people in developed culture would do on the streets but so many things in China are upside down anyway.

Rest assure the hyenas have targeted you the moment they notice you, they are just waiting for you to make eye contact, this is the signal their chance has come.  What I do normally is just scan and mark out the hyenas but never look them in the eye; exactly the same way you look ahead while walking so at least you don't step on shits.

If you notice 99% dalu ren don't look at strangers on the streets in the eye. They have a greyish aura (the worst kind of aura), stoneface, zombie-like look. Of all people they know what their kind is all about!

Shanghai, PRC

Da mas (40s upward). Direct participants of the cultural revolution, next to nil education, thoroughly brainwashed by CCP to attack,  close to or having menopause. Regardless of sex, most of those above 40s are the worst psychologically damaged scums you can find on planet Earth. Did you hear about the news how 4 of these $rich da mas got a young Shandong gigolo killed (employing his service)  while they were playing mahjong?

How long does brainwashing last? Easily a lifetime. Despite its length this article explained it very well. I am willing to bet few alive have both the experience and intellect the interviewee had as far as this topic is concerned.  http://www.crossroad.to/Quotes/globalism/Congress.htm

What you give is what you get, that's my overall experience when dealing with others. I feel sorry for all you who have such negative experiences with the Chinese, maybe it's the part of China you chose, but maybe it's something you're giving out yourself.

I'm not naive enough to think racism does not exist here, but I wouldn't have stayed so long or be raising a family here if I wasn't made to feel extremely welcome. Came in 2005 and would be glad to spend the rest of my life here.

Sure, the scrutiny I could do without, and they drive like fucking morons, but my overall impression of the Chinese in terms of how they treat me and my family remains extremely positive.

earthizen:

It depends on how close you get to know the locals, and vice versa. A simple greeting without much of further conversation naturally shields you from "toxic radiation".  Language barrier also serves you well in this case as it discourages close interaction. This is the good fence makes good neighbors approach which is perfectly valid. I wouldn't call this denial of reality or ostrich style living, I would call this being diplomatic. If works for you I say, "great, continue!"

Like earthizen I would say all is fine for as long you keep your distances with people. Give them a hand and many will take your arm. Invite them to stay at your home once when they are in need and they will just assume it's their second house and ask to stay and invade your privacy like crazy, not talking about the in-laws here. Lend money and kiss it goodbye because you will never get it back. I'm also fine for as long relations remain on a superficial level, but I have had troubles with virtually every Chinese I got close to, except for wifey, the give a hand and they take your arm is very common here, they don't know when to stop and what is acceptable in terms or 'friendship'. As for systemic racism, you have a family here but you will never be Chinese or seen as their equal, your stay here is temporary and the gov can kick you out anytime they want, never forget that.

"You will always be a foreigner to mainlanders".   To me this is one of the if not the best compliment one can receive as a human being on planet Earth. I live in Nanning, just like Martian, and agree with him completely. I have been here about five and a half years and apart from the odd occassion of total stupidity I have always felt comfortable here. People are curious but even that has died down in the last few years as they have become more used to seeing outsiders. I feel more at home here than I do back in the UK and have no plans for moving out.

My previous boss calling my new boss and my girlfriend to 'reprimand' them for 'siding with the American against your own" over the phone (they helped me go through SAFEA to get 20,000 in stolen wages back).
We won in the end, and she was still screaming "He's an orphan hillbilly!" (among other presumptuous, racist things) when I walked out with my money in hand.

Magically that's not racist.
