Q: Is lowering our expectations the only way to get past China-cynicism?

I like to complain. When I think something's wrong I just say it, and other expats often tell me: "just lower your expectations and life will be easier."

The logic there seems completely off to me. Is that really how most expats in China get by? By expecting crap?

yes...

not really expect crap, but more of a "shit will probably not go the way it logically should, oh well" type attitude

so yes set that expectation bar a little lower. it works wonders for your sanity

Expect things not to go well. If they don't, well, you already expected it, although you may be a little disappointed, it's something you can let go. If it goes better than expected...it's a good day.

Oh, you can still complain. You have to vent sometime, and to someone, but if you vent to a local, not only will they not understand what the heck you are complaining about, but you will be thought (they will very rarely voice it to your face) of as a "China hater." Some Chinese would even agree with you, but...you are a foreigner, so you shouldn't be complaining at all.

I would say, not only is it lowering your expectations, but in many cases, suspending them. Don't expect anything! Then, if something happens at all, you will be pleasently surprised! Sorry, but that is just the way the ball rolls, at least in my part of China.
