Q: TO MARRIED FOREIGNERS IN HEFEI: what documents are required?

Looking for advice from foreigners married to Chinese nationals in Hefei!

I will apply for my Certificate of No Impediment with the British Consulate in Shanghai on Thursday.

I wait 21 days then I go get it.

My girlfriend is from Anhui so I need to go with her to Hefei to register the marriage there.

I am not working. I am on L visa.

Is there anything else I need?

We will be travelling from Ningbo, since she works there, so I must ensure that I have ALL of the necessary documents at hand!

My gf checked the Anhui gov website and it says it can take a month? I have read some foreigners it took them 15 minutes to an hour?!

Why don't you get married in Hong Kong, that's what we did,Husband is an Australian, cause it's more simple for you as a foreigner. No need to confirm  your single status in writing. But you have to go there twice, the first time you need to apply for it. you can google it and get in touch with a law office in Hong kong. for You ,only need to show them your passport, for your girl friend,She has to show them her Fukou bo,Hong Kong passport and her Id card, she doesn't need to go with you at the first time tho.it takes some time for them to get the date, between 15-30 days I think. The second time, you two need to go there together, bring all the documents like the first time.

Getting married in Mainland is pretty complicated,as a foreigner,You need to show them :

1,your medic certificate(it seems you need to get done in China) ,

2,the original of your single certificate (go back to your country or ask your parents for help ,you need to send a letter saying that your parents can do it for you and send all your original documents back to your country, all they get it done for you, send it back to you.Its so tough.

3, your passport.

And it can be different in different provinces.

If you decide to try Hong Kong call them and confirm everything because things can change.   hope it helps and Good luck.

Besides what is stated above, you will need to bring what is called a "marriage photo".  It is like a 2 x 2  regular ID photo, just is the face of the 2 of you with a red background.

Needed for your marriage certificate, and do bring about 4 of them.

maggiegirly:

I was told by the local government that We need to get the marriage photo done in the marriage bureau,No need to bring a marriage photo.

Marriage Bureau in some cities will have a place to make the photo, and probably charge you more than on the outside. A friend once paid 30 yuan for the fricken photo, that outside costs less than 10. But it is an individual choice where to get the photo. But not all cities are into that racket.

Yes,true, like i said below,It CAN BE different in different provinces.

It's better to call the local government first and confirm everything before you go there.

Is it really different in every Province?  If so where is it the easiest and quickest and cheapest to get married and what are the downsides?

maggiegirly:

What I said,It CAN BE different in different provinces. You know, nothing is impossible. But I do think,Pretty much the same .so just call the local government and confirm everything before you go.

where is it the easiest and quickest and cheapest to get married ? so far,NO. But getting married in HK seems simplier.compared to mainland. That's why we got married in HK,it's not convenient either.let's say, marrying a foreigner is not easy, long way to go ,like the visa ,it's gonna be annoying ,so you have to be more patient.

yeah, I got married in Hefei a few years ago. From what I remember, all I needed was the Certificate of No Impediment (which was issued to me on the spot at the Aust. consulate in Shanghai), my passport, the required number of photos on a red background, and payment of the fee. Your wife will need her hukou booklet and ID card. I did not need a medical certificate; however, the requirements with these kinds of things often change, so it's best to give the office a call before you travel all the way out here. It only took a week for them to register our marriage and issue the certificates. It was all very straightforward.

Unless it's moved, the registry office is on Suixi Rd near the Fuyang Rd intersection.

Once you get married, you could transfer over to a family visa, which might be more convenient than a tourist visa.

I think its called a marriage visa now. Once applied and paid for takes about a week to get..Stay married for 5 years and you can apply for permanent residency.

Sangoku:

Actually, it's not because you are married for 5 years that you get the permanent residency, it depends on the kind of visa you currently hold during your five years in China, and also the "contribution" you brought to China, and that you pay your taxes in China.

We also got married in Hefei 2007.

The wedding registration in itself is not difficult in Hefei, but the registration with your consulate is pretty long and need a lot of documents.

In Hefei, it took us 5 minutes to register.

Depending on your country of origin, the process may take long or not as you need to get all your documents (e.g. civil status certificate) to be translated, legalized and notarized in Chinese for the registration in China, and your girlfriend must do the same in the language of your home country (e.g. English) for documents like the Hukou. In our case, we needed my documents to be legalized by the Chinese embassy in my home country (my country's regulations). When all the documents are done (translated, etc), you can go to register your wedding in Hefei.

If you have all the documents ready, it takes 5 minutes and you're married. But you shouldn't expect big greetings from the local authority, it's just paperwork not like in Western Countries.

We got cheat on the amount to pay so I didn't keep a good memory of the civil wedding.

Don't forget that some official documents (like civil status) are valid only for a certain period of time (ex: 6 months).

Also refer to your embassy to get the step-by-step process to be able to register your wedding in your home country, failing to do so may delay the recognition of your wedding.

After the wedding registration both of you will also need to translate, legalize and notarize your wedding certificates .

Let me know if you have other questions.
