Q: Most ridiculous thing a Chinese boss has done to you?

I bet there is a gold mine of stories on this forum, you've all been here so long (most of you!)

My boss is quite nice. She is a good boss. She can be a little touchy but she is pretty good. She even takes everyone out to meals, KTV's. She once paid for us all to stay in a private estate for a day then climb a mountain, lots of expensive food too.

I had to sing in a choral in Mandarin (mandatory, no escape) for an inter-department contest, with the lyrics printed in Mandarin. I just arrived in China, I had only one month of class in Mandarin only using pinyin. No amount of pleading my case with arguments like "I can't even read the lyrics" and "I just learned to count and buy groceries, I'm supposed to sing in Mandarin ?!" could convince my boss to let me pass on the choral singing. Directives said all teaching staff, I'm part of the teaching staff, therefore I should sing.

My current boss is bullshit-free, 0% shenanigans. He even buy me good coffee.

Sinobear:

At least you're French, giving you an excuse for not having the b**ls to refuse. It's fun to refuse crap because your boss has to weigh the loss of face for him/her versus the cost of losing you.

(I just like teasing French people because I am Quebecois and pure lain Quebecois are infinitely superior to people from France because we've never surrendered....except the Plains of Abraham...France didn't want us, neither did the rest of Canada...the U.S wanted us at one point but couldn't stand the winter...maple syrup, nickel and poutine...Vivre le Quebec Libre!)

Meh, when you are a bunch of trappers in a taiga/tundra the other side of the Atlantic, with Bible-tumping rednecks for only neighbours, that's easy to be undefeated. Ho, and fighting only with the big guys, against under-armed, under-manned adversaries. It was my early days in China, I was still very unsure of the do's and don't.

My bosses did something similar to MrA; he was given a sheet of mandarin characters and told it was a speech he should read. We'd only been there a month and didn't speak anything beyond hello! They really didn't undeestand why he said no...

my Departmental head bawled me out for using CELTA teaching methods in an IELTS class. no

the vice-president, who was also present, then asked me (with a big smile on her face) to help her make an application for a semester in an American University.

I am very surprised they even know the difference, most of the time they only want you to "teach English".

"teach like a Chinese teacher" I was told.

I required the the poor students in my class to practice speaking for their IELTS, as well as listening, reading and writing.

They were so upset.

Pass everyone regardless of marks, attendance or performance. This was a design school whose program was centered around preparing students for entry into the graphic design field.

More than successful degree mill now (rhymes with and is on par with "Laffles") although graduates can no longer obtain employment as they "lack ability to create, explore and...design."

Dear god, the worst students at my university are the art and design students. It's not even about language level, it is about respect and brains. Those kids are just dumb. You must have been suffering.

I got the same requirements from a large (agricultural) university in southern China. Most students in this case were English majors so it wasn't much of a problem but still a very hypocritical demand.

Yup, same thing, in a top ranked university. I said no, and didn't do it, but the grades were modified afterwards when recorded in their database. Then, they wonder why it's so hard to recruit IT engineers worth their salt. And why companies are picky about interns.

My boss accused me of hauling a shopping cart (one of the very large one's from walmart) and carrying up 4 flights of stairs to put in the office.  I am almost 5ft tall and weigh about 105lbs... I could not pick that think up if I wanted to never mind carry it up 4 flights of stairs.  (And why the heck would I want to waste my time doing something like that?  I have better things to do than put walmart shopping carts in strange places)

Here's my story: (it's sad but true. About a girl that I once knew. She took my love, then ran around.)

When I first arrived, I needed help to get around, like most foreigners. One of the senior Chinese teachers at my uni helped me get a phone number, phone and a few other things. She asked me so many questions.

Anyway, when we're done we eat at a modest place near the school. Good food, by the way. Talk talk talk.

Appropos of nothing, she takes two 10 rmb bills and one 20, and explains to me, very carefully, that in China, 10 + 10 = 20.

[Thanks! Good to know! Do you mind if I write that down? Sure to need it in the future!]

I did not respond. I did not pay much attention, because I think I recall something about this in first grade. I guess I wasn't paying enough attention, so ... she explained it again. Dammit I'm trying to eat!

I said something like 'Thanks, yes, I think 10 + 10 = 20 everywhere. Thank you so much for helping me, but I know that.'

She looked confused and a little hurt. I cannot imagine why. So ...

Fortunately! She also had two 5s, so she did the 5 + 5 = 10 lesson, for which I thanked her quite kindly.

I have more. I have so many more.

I'll be here all night! Please tip your waitress!

ScotsAlan:

I had similar with a couple I know. Went for a meal and I asked for the bill and paid. They were both amazed that I could count Chinese money. Ah but wait, thinking about it the same guy was showing me his car one day and he asked if we had GPS in the west. This is an educated couple by the way.

cuz they think that they much smarter than us, and Zippo created our latest technology. I swear one time they want to help me OPEN an xls file, much less add calculations. They don't add any macros themselves, mind you. What use is an xls without macros? Anyway, yup, that's mind boggling.

At another school, one of the admin did not believe I could drive his fake Forerunner. He was surprised when I drove it around the block. I guess it was supposed to implode? Or was I supposed to drive it into a river? Missed opportunity, I guess.

Last time my contract was due, I was all geared up to ask for an extra 1000 rmb. As I peruse my contract I notice the numbers....an extra 3000 rmb.

She asks "Is there any problem?" at my stunned silence. "No problem" I mutter and sign in case it is a mistake.

Ridiculous, I knowwink Thanks, Chinese Boss Lady

I was asked to publicly shame lower performing students at a high school. The boss wanted me, and the other Western teachers, to read out the names of students who had the lowest scores in front of a crowd at an assembly, and criticize behavior. We all flat out said no. No debate, just we won't take part in humiliation.

My last boss was probably one of the biggest idiots I have ever met. He not only got half the Chinese staff to quit, destroy an entire chain of a business... but made a ton of stupid decisions that NOBODY agreed with.

Anyway, he wanted to promote me to take on extra responsibility. I was hesitant (because logic told me this guy was a moron) but I was up to the challenge.

Unfortunately, in China a promotion doesn't always mean more money... which I demanded.

He made a big issue out of it (didn't want negotiate) and I just quit because I didn't need to deal with morons like him anymore. After I left, he decided to give all the foreigners a raise to the amount I was asking... all of them. Why promote someone, not give them the raise they ask, then give a raise to all other staff afterward? Chinese management...

Sure, it stung a little at the time. But fast forward to now and I make 4-5x what I asked at the time and he went out of business. I think he went to jail too. Karma, it exists!

Trying to cut the monthly allowance that came in addition to my salary and that they first added (probably to get me to sign), they tried all sorts of tricks to do so.

The contract went as "Salary and Benefits: A base salary of 10000.00RMB, including a living allowance and airfare tickets (in words 14000.00RMB) paid before the 10th of the month".

One month after we signed the contract when payday came they tried to tell me that they made a mistake to what I said "yes but the contract says that you must pay me this" then tried to tell me that the Chinese part was different, too bad for them I can read it, and so on.

At the end I got the whole thing but it was a hassle. To the Chinese bosses out there a contract is a contract, stick to it otherwise don't be surprised if your foreign teachers also do as they please (e.g. not showing up in some classes).

Same symptom as the restaurants advertising food items that they never had, the infamous bowls of meiyou.

I worked at a small mandarin school doing online marketing and some business development for a couple of months. The "big boss" of course didn't speak any English, and when talking to foreigners he would talk as fast as when he spoke to Chinese.

My supervisor would regularly shout at and insult our customers then blame me for the shit conversion rate of our prospects. I stayed there 3 months, they fired me before I could hand in my resignation, what a blessing that was!
