Q: Moving on, tired of the nonsense.

Trying to get my work visa renewed in Hangzhou.

Been trying to work with two different employers. Both are companies that send people to client schools. I have one job lined up with one company. But the process is becoming too cumbersome.

No one seems to know what the new requirements are. The company who got me the job asked me to get a Chinese Criminal Report. Got it. Next thing is to notarize it. So two more trips to another office. Now this may or may not work, since I called the Foreign Expert Bureau and inquired (which they will seemingly not do). This is what has been totally maddening. They tell me to do something, I spend my money on it and it may not work. Then so much of them saying "I don't know." "I cannot tell you." All that jazz, and I am sick of it.

I also paid money for a Chinese bureau to "authenticate" (I hate this word by the way) my diploma. Submitted it May 6th. Was told that it would take a month. Called them last week with help of my student and found out that it won't come back until the end of June. So now I have another company in Shanghai who claims they can get it in about 10-12 working days, which means I will get it around June 19th, and since my Residence Permit expires June 30th, I feel it will not be enough time. Besides I would have to travel to Shanghai, get the authentication bullshit and then come back here to find out I wasted a day and 1700 RMB and won't work because I do not have the correct CBR.

Not to mention the one company of the two, told me in May I needed a TEFL certificate. Not required. So I don't know what is true or right and what isn't. I have also been asked by several of these people I can do authentications from my embassy. No I can't. Why advise me of something when you don't know? I do not get that.

No one seems willing to call the Foreign Expert Bureau, claiming they change their rules all the time. Maybe the Chinese Background check will work or not, they say. Well ask them! Two months of this. Tired of it. Going to give the company the paperwork I have now, and ask them one more time.....1. Is the Chinese criminal check acceptable? 2. Will I have enough time (about 9-10 working days) after getting my authentication from Shanghai will this work? If not, I'm done.

I am married to a Chinese woman in another city and will probably have to go that route for now and get an L visa. Really, I am tired of teaching and all the bullshit involved and wish to do something else. I really don't want to waste another year of my life where they are going to send me anyway. Maybe by next year if I want to do it again (hope not, want to start an EBay business here since I am next to Yiwu.

Maybe fate is telling me something.

Your RP expires by the end of June? If you completed the Contract you are entitled to 15-days RP extension at PSB in the same city you worked. Bring 2 photos and RP extension is instant, so go to PSB on June 30th.

If you come to PSB earlier you will get 15-days extension from the day you hand passport to copper.

I am having that tomorrow.

When you'll arrive at the new job site, you are entitled to another 15-days extension. Don't wait and use first a 15-day extension in same city you got it, but move to the new city ASAP.

Chinese Non-crim. record must be authenticated? By who?

Stupid on the top of the stupid! "Big-(English) 'ben'-(Chinese)".

Let me cool you down: 'my RP expires tomorrow and I couldn't find a new sponsor. I had one, but they cancelled signed Contract two weeks ago, because I am Non.

Dentist can't finish work on my chew (paid in advance) in some two weeks left on my RP, so manager took me to another School in the same city, where I got Contract till next June. I accepted Contract with 500 RMB shorter payment for the same amount of hours I had on my previous Contract. I never do that!

Moving to the new place today or tomorrow.

PSB will extend the RP 5-15 days. That would give me time for the FEB to complete my application.

Not 5-days! 15-days&2 photos in the city you completed the Contract and another 15-days in new city.

It use to be 30-days extension once you compete the Contract. I had twice 30-days extension since I am China.

It was sufficient time for your arrival to new city and 1. new FEC application; 2. ME and 3. new Contract length RP extension.

And if you choose to exit China and return home, you could spend that 30-days for 'preparing for exit' i.e. packing, traveling around China-women&men and exit.

Yes, 15-days extension is because of new FEC and things I wrote above.

I'll tell more about tomorrow AM ....

OK, my point of going to cops on the last day of RP is: cop will give you 15-days extension from the day you hand the passport in. It is stupid requirement, but that's how it was translated to me.

Rep. said yesterday that cop will process 15-day extension in 24-hours. I don't remember that was translated to me last week, so I made a conclusion it will be instant stamp.

I'll write more at 10 AM today.

Most of friends that are married here just have their pay go to the wife's name on a bank account and tell the inspectors they are volunteer teachers teaching for free, and avoid all the hassle of paperwork.

Listen do not listen to Chinese companies when it comes to authentication, they'll lie to you about the time frame and over charge you by over double. Do the research and find a company in your respective country

icnif77:

Do you ever get feeling Chinese want you spend more money because you are big earner in their eyes?

The employers behave that way and if they can't succeed in your spending they remodel the Contract .... and (try! ) to pay less!

Relax, thats China for you.

Could you tell us where your passport is from, BTW it wouldn't be an L visa, it would be a family Q visa.

Anyway, yeah you are running out of time, you need to get the school or any school to start your residents acceptance status now at the FEC office. So think, relax and choose who is offering you the safest route and who is more realistic, its sounds like Shanghai won't work in time, 10 to 12 days wow nice, but you've already started with another school right? Than its best to finish with them.

About your security check, don't worry you DON"T need it from your home country if you've been in China working legally for 6 months or longer, which it sounds like you have. So yes 99% sure your security check you got in China will work fine. Its a nationwide law, so don't worry, that 1% is for passports that are on a special list for extra checking, but based off your excellent grammar I don't think yo have such a passport from a country thats on a Chinese watch list for extra checking.

You'll be fine if you don't lose it, if no choice go for a Q visa, there are other ways to work.

So, I can extend my current Residence Permit at least 15 days after June 30th, in my case, to give myself and the Foreign Expert Bureau time to complete or reject my application? If I get my authentication, the earliest I can begin the application is June 19-20th. I will go to the PSB tomorrow and try to ask them for the extension and see what happens.

icnif77:

Don't hand your book tomorrow. Just ask about it.

You'll get an extension from the day you hand your passport. It must be instant stamp.

I was at cops last week and I got that translation. I am going tomorrow early AM with two photos. My RP expires tomorrow.

Cop looked at my photos last week and confirmed photos are in good size and background some special colour .... (I forgot which one).

So, ask cops for the proper size or show them your pics you have.

I am off the cops for 15-days RP extension. I am not sure what that was, but ...

I came to cops at my last day of RP and everything was c&d. Cop asked me to fill up bilingual application for an RP extension. One of my pics was glued to the top R side of the form.

Cop went to the puter and inserted my data on PSB's form.

Two senior 'assistants' were carefully watching what he is doing.

I had to write statement why I need an extension ...

Then, copper took my pic over police webcam and gave me no pic certificate, which I can use as ID, he said.

I can pick-up my passport tomorrow, so thingy isn't instant stamp like I thought.

I was at cops 35', and I am not sure if this is novelty in new regulations or coppers in my city don't know what they should do.

As I understood my form will go to the upper levels of coppery for an approval, i.e. it isn't sure, I will get 15-days extension.

My city isn't small whatsoever. We have 'Wally' and porches und audis on the road, except I am the first foreign inhabitant in the long city's history. I told you I am like panda .... here.

Tired of the nonsense, part 2.

Went to the company who wants to hire me. It's June 7th. Talked to the head man and guess what, they STILL DONT FUCKING KNOW what this "new system" is. They do not know if the Chinese Criminal Check will work, nor do they have an inkling how long the Foreign Expert Bureau will keep the documents, if I can do everything on time.

Concerning the criminal check, the woman asked me if I can get one online. I said probably but it needs to be authenticated. She said I should go to my embassy. Even though I have told this woman about three fucking times, I went THE EMBASSY WILL NOT AUTHENTICATE THIS. The boss was cool, but he talks in that exasperating way that Chinese talk, stating a bunch of bullshit I already know that doesn't help and having no clue of what I need.

Concerning the extension of current Residence Permit, the lady behind the counter spoke good English but didn't make much sense. First she said I needed a "foreigner card" which turned out to be that A-B-C card. I didn't understand if I could extend the Residence Permit, or if so how long, and she didn't know if I just decided to leave my job and prepare to leave how long of a time could I get.

What really sucks from this is that people who renew with same company get a free ride and do not have to provide this authentication shit. So if you are lucky to be rehired, you can use that fake ass degree one more year and not have a criminal check done. My half ass college didn't rehire me so now I have to go through this. It is not so much of a refusal or a proble,, it is just no one knows what is what.

ironman510:

Your China criminal check will work man, no worries but get it notarized which I think you did.. Its a nation wide law to allow us to use this check because we stayed in China over 6 months, but yes some cities are 50/50 with degrees authenticated and the ABC cards, meaning some started to use it and some did not. I'm in a similar state as you, but I got my degree authenticated before I came to China as it was required in 2008, I will work for the Educational Gov department and they said I needed:

1. Criminal Check / notarize it. (Finished.)
2. Health Check (Finished)

3. Release letter, Canceled Expert Cert and Recommendation letter.  (Get it June 15th.)

4. Hand in all doc's to the Gov agent guys who handles the working permit transfer.

5. Wait for the new FEC "Expert booklet" or ABC Card (Shenzhen said they start ABC cards on Oct 1st.)

6. Go to the police and apply for a Resident Permit "RP".

I know you are in the transfer stage or trying to start the transfer stage. Don't worry you'll be fine once they get going even if they don't know or they say they don't know how some of these new laws work, these problems always work themselves out in China. Just a lot of BS to start with, but be prepared for the risk of your degree not being accepted because it doesn't have the sticker on the back of the notarized copy, but you said you'll get it back in June? How did you get your degree authenticated within China and from a Chinese authentication office in China? Maybe I missed something. Always have a Q visa job ready in the back. .

I decided to give up my working visa and stay with my wife.  I have an idea for an Internet type business. I am also next to the city of Yiwu which is a huge commodities market. I basically would like to be a wholesaler, and put in some groundwork for this last year when I was home. My mother is also sick and probably dying and would like to be able to go home at any time.

I and my wife are separated by distance also. Mainly I have been teaching because first I enjoyed it, but the last several years it has been a grind and a pain. I couldn't care less about it anymore but want to stay in China and be productive. I want to get healthy also, I am way overweight, I binge drink about once a week, which is frowned upon by her, although sometimes we will go to parties and whatnot.

All my friends have gone home and gone one with their lives. I still have a few acquaintances here and there, but mostly DJ/bar type people. Somehow, a lot of these foreign folk are doing other gigs besides teaching, owning businesses, working in other businesses outside the realm of education altogether.

Hangzhou used to be so much FUN. Now, not so much. Just some expensive bars, crappy western food, much dirtier and more crowded. 15 years ago when I started, this was a new adventure. It was a lot like going to college again, except you are the teacher now. Parties every weekend. Light work. Met people from all over the Earth from very continent. No fuss. Getting a visa here used to be so easy. I remember back in the day when you could change from a tourist to a Z visa in country.

The pedophiles and the forgers screwed up a good thing. Killed the golden goose.

I turned 50 years old this year, and honestly this job was a junior middle school in the boonies in a run down building which smells like urine (seriously), with 40 kids in a class. Did a demonstration class there. Can't see me trying to deal with 40 bored brats. I have lamented before that the colleges are way out in the boonies.

The he nice thing about getting the visa every year was that I was taken care of. It is sort of like being on welfare in many ways. Now a lot of the jobs are far away, the city is boring as hell, I am alone and want to be a husband to my beautiful wife.

Dude, get the visa with your wife and start your own business. That's what I did and I have never looked back. Besides you are 50 and need to start thinking about retirement and setting something up online would be your best bet.

I work entirely online and I would NEVER go back to teaching because it would mean:

- lack of freedom

- running into spoiled brats

- getting screwed around by the schools, bosses and Chinese management

- making a lot less than I do now

Just put all your effort into your business idea and forget teaching for someone else. Worse comes to worse just tutor out of your home.

Wow. Nice book! I thought the same 10 years ago. I've been teaching for 6. Gave it up because the paperwork was more time consuming and costly than it was worth; at least in my mind. Been married 10 years to a girl from Guangxi. I decided to just get the Q visa. they were nice to me and gave me 7 years on the visa. I'll be living in Sichuan on my retirement savings for awhile. If you are offered a job on your Q; keep in mind the offer will be for low pay and 40 hour work loads offered mostly by training schools.

ironman510:

The pay depends on who offers you the job, I've been offered 25,000 down to 20,000 to go on a Q, it depends on your experience and willing to do what.

I got the diploma authentication back in Shanghai. Totally surprised by this. Trying to get my company to see if it will work, (with my Chinese criminal background check). Like Silvio says on the Sopranos "I get out, but they pull me back in!"
