My friend phoned up for a very good teaching job in Nanshan 20,000 a month with working visa and free house and paid holidays.
they said would you like to come in for an interview, then they asked him what colour are you he said I am not white I am black.they told him we need a white person.(he is from the USA)
loved to hear your thoughts on this.
I think its bloody disgusting that people here in China still Judge you on the colour of your skin.
I dont know how to feel about it. The whole world is generally racist still. Look at " developed first world Europe". All the hate crimes going on with muslims. Looks like they dont seem to know the difference between practicing Muslims, fundamentalists, and people that look kinda dark. Not saying North America is any better. There has been alot of resentment to the Muslim community for a decade plus in the states and if Canada was unfortunate enough to have anything happen, Im sure we wouldnt fare much better.
The only difference between China and the rest of the world is they just come right out and say it. I would be curious as to how people of different races feel about this.
Would you rather the interviewer just say it directly? Or give a bullshit answer that they are interviewing other people that day and they will " let you know". At least you know its for something as stupid and trivial as your race and you probably didnt want to work with these people anyways. Seems better than worrying and guessing if its race or your inadequate.
yeah, coz a lot of ppl are still living in the 1900s............. the parent wants the white people to teach their english and assume they are good. if you are black, it seems that they are afraid you comes from Africa or whatnot
well you know before that chinese are racists, why you choose to come here anyways if you complain about it? They are not racist only against black, also sometimes against white. We just have to deal with it, unless you were forced to come to china, it was your on own choice to face this bullshit every day

maybe you should put your feet in my friends shoes and see what its like.

you mean it is similiar that they turn you down because you are not native.oh yeah thats also racism, because not only natives can teach english. deal with it. get a real job and don't complain about thinks that are standart in china. guess what, in usa blacks also get turned down etc. complaining in a forum surely doesnt help
I am suprised they asked directly for the colour of his skin. Why do you think you need to attach a recent photo with most applications? From my experience working in HR in China I was shocked how racist they are with the selection of teachers. Blacks and Asians have it the worst. South east Asians can usually get part time work. Whites seem to get full time jobs with ease regardless of their English speaking ability. I find it strange that they would pass on hiring a qualified black guy for an unqualified white guy. The answer is a typically Chinese one. The company doesn't take education seriously.
Education is a business anywhere you go. In China it's about selling the white face because that's what the Chinese want and expect.
For Chinese foreign teacher means white monkeys... few years ago me and my black American friend went to small town where we met decent Chinese girl, after few conversation she refused to believe that he is American... in her opinion in USA only white people live .that's what they learn in the school. I think u can try some other place, I'm sure u will find better opportunity, if u want to relaxing life then try second or third tier city.
