I've never heard of a school cancelling an expert's certificate, but that's what my new employer wants me to do. They want to start a new experts certificate. It seems so strange!
It wouldn't matter too much to me, but it means a ton of extra paperwork, including translations, calling home to get old visas scanned and sent from (my old, expired passport sits at home). Can anyone tell me the reason for this? I thought you could extend these things indefinitely...

Your FEC is tied to your employer (School). You can extend FEC for 3 years (I think) with the same employer.
When you change your employer, old employer must cancel FEC, and new employer (School) must apply for new FEC with Cancelation certificate of previous FEC.
Schools always applied or cancelled my FEC. I have never cancelled it myself.

I'm not a crazy poster, but I've been reading these boards almost daily for more than a year now. There are people here who thumb down threads just because they can. Board mods should count users 'thumb up/down' to reign it in. Ofc no one will listen to me- I don't post enough to be recognizable.
Ok, from what I make of this, you have changed jobs without having your former job cancel the FEC, this means, you still need the letter of good standing/recommendation and cancelation of your previous FEC. You can only extend an FEC when you are with the same employer, no big worries, it is not a ton of paperwork, takes like 30 min., your new employer should be doing the work and it only requires copies of your degree, passport and any Cert. that you may have, your current resident visa from your former employer will be canceled and then another will be placed with your new employers name on it.
