It's my experience that you should never give local cops any chance to have power over a "laowai".  They know it may be the only time in their lives that it may happen and they "enjoy" it as much as possible.  One time in GZ a cop asked me for my passport while I was leaving my apartment on my way to work.  I told him I would go upstairs and get it to show him but that I had to go to work right after for a meeting.  I should have kept my mouth shut!  He made me follow him to the police station.  As soon as we got there he said something in Cantonese to the girl behind the counter, a few minutes later I saw a piece of paper come out of the printer in front of the girl.  I assumed it was for me and asked the policeman what I was waiting for.  He said "just wait" and smiled at me.  He proceeded to play on his cell phone, smoke cigarettes, drink tea and every once in a while look at me and giggle for another 2 hours and 45 minutes!  When he was done with his "power trip", he handed me the piece of paper(yes the same one that was printed over two hours before) off the printer(which was a warning to keep my passport on me at all times) had me sign it and told me that if he ever caught me without my passport again it would be much more serious.  I found out later "serious" was a 50rmb fine.  The "serious" was just his sad little attempt to frighten a "laowai" so he could have something to brag about later to his friends(I'm guessing).  This is just one of many examples of why you as a "laowai" should make sure to cross every I and dot every T.  Especially if your a big guy like myself.  Trust me you have never seen a little Chinese guys eyes light up brighter than when they think you've given them the chance to hold even an ounce of authority over you.  Take care of your business or suffer.

Okay. I think I understood that, but it' really too early. Let's try:

"Can someone help foreigners who have overstayed their visa?"

"If foreigners have overstayed their visa, can someone help them become legal again?"

Can someone help foreigners safely go through the legal process of restoring their visa without punishment?"

Um...I guess it would depend on the length of the overstay, and how connected the foreigner was. Did the foreigner have the process going already, and the overstay was the result of how long it took to approve the new visa? Is there a work place involved? Or was it just a case of the foreigner being lazy (neglect) to do things in a proper and timely manner? What type of visa is trying to be reinstated?

Just a few questions to help clarify the situation. Okay?

There was me thinking that you were a gentleman and a scholar.    Why the hostility?   See below.

No hostility whatsoever. It's a common practice for these kind of spam questions to appear in waves. You weren't here, apparently, for the initial sequence of events. You can review them in my first answer to Alex's post (now collapsed).

And yeah, I called the guy a jerk, something which was, perhaps, unwarranted, but it was a pretty "jerky" thing to do, and it seems in the end, it was justified, as he went from eminent denial to abuse within a sentence or two. I don't think I responded in kind. I've no hard feeling towards Alex, or anyone else. Really.

The answer is Yes, it is possible to fix. It is usually situation dependent, but almost all situations can be fixed. (unless the foreigner has a criminal record or something else severe like that.)

But, it does cost money. I work for a foreign service company that can assist in the process. If you would like more information it would be better to discuss the details in a more private conversation. My personal e-mail is adub4444@gmail.com if you would like to discuss it further.

giadrosich:

Well, that sounded like a set-up question if I ever heard one. Post a question anonymously with the appropriate Chinglish, wait till people respond, then provide the "correct" answer, which "happens" to (surprise!!!!) give your companies contact information, in the process, giving everyone elses answer a "thumbs down" so your answer goes straight to the top! What a jerk.

Get real, I didn't even post my company e-mail address, I'm just trying to help this person out if they really did overstay their Visa or have a friend who has overstayed.

At least I know what I'm talking about and not spouting random B.S. like you, confusing people with your conjecture instead of providing actual facts.

Yeah, right. You've got me convinced. For your first post, you just happen to wander on the board and work for a company that addresses this particular question. My, it's your lucky day, and everyone who needs this service! Go list it in classifieds. I asked for more information. How is that conjecture?

"Um I guess" is the definition of conjecture. It has nothing to do with how "connected" the foreigner is and the length usually plays no part in the cost or how fixable or unfixable a problem is.

Stop posting wrong information, and stop making false accusations against me.

How is that a set up question? It seems he is trying to offer a solution to the question asked. So what if it is a company promotion? I know a couple of people who have had their overstays fixed by agencies.

What is it with you people who think you can go around calling people names? I guess you feel like a big man abusing people from behind the computer screen.

How long have you been in China? It has everything to do with connections, whether it's through a school, business, agency, or personal connections. I know people whose Passport and visa expired, and because they knew locals with great connections, they didn't even have to pay a fine! None. Zip!

The "guess" was because of the inaccurate wording of the original posted question, so I was making an assumption about what they meant, not about what I was asking. I was asking very relevant questions to try and get to the meaning, but you come along and, Wow! You know exactly what they mean. Btw, you still didn't address the issue of how your first post was tailor-made to this question. I've been on this board for a while, and that was a set-up. Do you get paid on commission?

Guys, could you at least TRY to be sublte? Create a personality , let it participate for a sort while in other topics and THEN do your anonymous set up question?

Opps!

Did I say "guys"? Sorry, i forgot you were both one and the same person.

You just think you're so smart don't you? How about doing something actually intelligent and look at my profile to see I've been a member since April 19, 2012. Just because I don't get on here and post everyday like you losers doesn't demerit my post.

The anonymous question is not my post, the Mods and the ISP can prove that, although I don't expect you to believe it or comprehend something logical like that. You really think I would go through the trouble of making up the Chinglish about abuse and detention just so I could response with ZERO information about my company?

Keep it coming with the false accusations, its all untrue just like the B.S. conjecture you post on every question and call "information"

@Guilinrat you say "we get people like you here all the time". Who are you to make this kind of statement? Are you the forum moderator? Are you the God of the forum? While advertisements should be posted in the classifieds, what Alex wrote was hardly an ad.

I will defend him on this occasion, because I'm sick of reading comments from people like yourself who think you can dictate to others what they can and cannot post. Just because you have 3000 odd posts does not mean shit to me. All it implies is that you have nothing better to do with your life than waste time posting replies on a shitty forum.  I'll inform London of your amazing forum achievement...who knows, you may even be worthy of a gold medal.

And FYI, I do not know Alex or have any association with him whatsoever.

If you over stay, file for extension and beg forgiveness, you could be told toave and fined depending on the length of time, why would you over stay and not expect problems?

if you end up in detention your embassy or nearest consulate will check on you to make sure you are being treated fairly in prison even though they cannot stop the guards or inmates from abusing you.

Not very subtle alex, answering your own question.

We get people like  you all the time, one of the most annoying ones were from a group called "mandarin garden".

Why not post it in the classifieds section? If you do it here, most of us will tell everyone we know to stay away from you.

lokethebloke:

Why do you jump to conclusions so quickly?    And what's the problem if they do post as they do.   I'm trying to learn the ways of this strange world some of you inhabit.

Please don't shout at me.

GuilinRaf:

Hello Lokethebloke.

I dont think I have ever shouted at you.

As to the jumping to conclusions, well, we get these things evey once in a while. This place called "mandarin garden" last year was REALLY annoying since they would hijack almost every thread to post their very long advertisement. Tedious did not even begin to describe it.

For example, one guy was asking advice on how to understand his girlfriend.  Among the usual good advice, joke advice, the clowns from MG would begin something like "Yes, relationships in China can be very challenging indeed, that is why in Mandrin Garden we...." and then we would have this VERY long parragraph on how great his school is, services offered etc.

Then on another vein, somone asked about favorite food, and again "coming to China, you will encounter many different kinds of food. In Mandarin garden....." and get the exact same long and tedious advertisement again and again.

So, whenever someone posts an anynymous question on a visa, or language and suddenly "voila" a full, exctremely well though out and verboise answer will appear.

In my case, I just lose it.  I like this forum as I see it as a way for us to relax, to exchange information, and even quarrel among outselves, etc. but, if it gets hijacked by advertisements then the fun is lost.  That is my pet peeve: advertisements belong in the classifieds section and not here.

Anyway, i cannot speak for the others, but maybe this helps give you some insigit into how my thinking works at least in regards to this matter.

Peace!

I just want to add that if the question comes from a person who does not post anonymously, then I do not have a problem. My problem is that the schools, service places, etc. post their question anonymously and then answer their own question witih a matter of minutes, sometimes a couple of hours.  And usually, they are by people with one or two posts all of them related to their service.

Peace!
