Q: No one in my office...

There are only two people in my office, out of around 25.

Are you guys sticking around til the last day of Spring Festival or getting out of there?

I've already been on holidays for three weeks.  Getting out of town on Friday.

My wife told me today that while the people officially finish work at COB tomorrow, in reality they've been doing what they want for a week already.

last year, they had me working 9 hours all alone. it was the result of an argument about overtime pay. they thought it was unreasonable for me to demand payment for working 12 hours on a holiday (as well as off-day for me), dressed as santa at christmas. i refused their day off in compensation. why would i want a day off, just before i'm already getting 12 days off for chinese new year?
anyway, it was great fun. i played loud music, ate lots of microwaved stuff (i was letting my fridge defrost before i went to my family in the county), and surfed the internet all day long.

Eorthisio:

It always makes me laugh whenever they want the foreigners to work on Christmas day then think they can give us a random day off in exchange being completely oblivious about the meaning of Christmas. If I work on Christmas I rather have extra pay than another day off in exchange.

But when it comes to Spring Festival don't touch it, it's a sacred moment for the Chinese staff. I was seriously told "it's different, you don't understand" when asking them if they would work during Chinese New Year.

jetfire9000:

At Eorthsio - next time ask Chinese students "What is Spring Festival" and record the ones that say " It is just like Christmas for foreigners."  You can then replay that to the staff who insist otherwise!

Are any Chinese office workers obligated to work during this time or only the public servants?  What about the stock brokers and bankers?
