But if it's someone who changed history and influenced humanity I'd say it really has to one of the old school guys.

Bowie, Dylan, Hendrix, Black Sabbath, the Rolling Stones, ACDC and the guys on your list would all be contenders.

Or, the Beatles. They shook the world.

Wow. What a horrible list. Where's Kurt Cobain? The STP guy whose name I can't recall. Not to mention the real competition between Keith Moon and John Bonham. I vote Moon. He out partied and out drummed the field.

Typical haughty-minded to exclude the guy who builds the Pantheon...Springsteen...from being welcomed in it...Basicslly, theftick and roll museum was built around Bruce Springsteen...you might want to include the golden years of Hollywood ...everything from the shark in Jaws to Pacino and Deniro fed The Springsteen myth..his work ethic and integrity ( wasn’t a junky or abuser of women)  defined American spirit in the 70’s...80’s and 90’s...”Born to Run” is basically the apex of American rock and the first authentic American opera...that being said: Idont care for what he has become on this century...seemingly grasping for relevance in every effort

I'd leave Springsteen off the list..

He may have been very influential to American culture... but not so much internationally (not talking about music, but culture).

The others we're talking about were much more wide-spread in their influence in that respect.

Uhh...I'm not sure what you mean "outside America" since Springsteen played a huge part in the Human Rights campaign with Amnesty International (Yes this irks the Chinese..I've noticed you've left most of the artists besides Dylan off the list..U2, The Police, Springsteen...though Led Zepplin supports Amnesty)....That kind of helped Nelson Mandela get out of jail...Also obvious as hell the guy has a massive European following...Icing on the cake would be the guy works for SONY...Japanese....and his 9 digit royalties is something they aren't really willing to let go of..(See the circumstances where they replaced their CEO with an American just to renegotiate Springsteen's contracts)..Hate to say it the guy has plenty of sway outside America

No one has rocked as long or as hard as Iggy Pop. He had a few excellent songs, great albums and co-wrote a few classics amongst a lot of noise. And he's still going hard.

For my money, Neil Young really rocked it and still does. A lot of the so-called legends, were basically soft cocks with a publicity machine and paparazzi on speed dial.

Hell, what about Bez from the Happy Mondays? He's gotta be up there....never sang a note, never played a chord, couldn't dance for fuck but was a superstar (albeit short lived and burnt out badly).

Yep, my vote is for Bez。

diverdude1:

Neil Young.

for me he is the guy who maybe bumps my #1,,, but not quite... but he does,, in his own way,,, nobody like Mr Young,,, unique.  A definite rock n roll futhermucker!

cant decide if best is Heart of Gold, Harvest Moon, or Cortez, Cortez....

what’s your favorite?

"Harvest Moon" Lyrics

Neil Young

Come a little bit closer,
hear what I have to say
Just like children sleepin,
we could dream this night away

But, there's a full moon rising
Let's go dancing in the light
We know where the music's playing
let's go out and feel the night

-chorus-

Because I'm still in love with you;
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you,
on this Harvest Moon

When we were stangers,
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers,
I loved you with all my heart

But, now it's getting late
and the moon is climbing high
I want to celebrate,
see it shining in your eyes

-chorus-

Because I'm still in love with you;
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you,
on this Harvest Moon

(harmonica solo)

-chorus-

Because I'm still in love with you;
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you,
on this Harvest Moon

I'm a big fan of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere album. Cowgirl in the Sand is a standout. Back in the day i had over a dozen of his Lps. But Cinnamon Girl may be his most rockong song. And the single note guitar solo in it still rates as one of the best solos ever.

Ummm. Pete Townsend? (if you're racking your brains - The Who). And of course, Roger Daltrey. Robert Plant

Morrissey (not one of my types, but certainly will be to many)

David Lee Roth (when he was good)

diverdude1:

Daltry had (has?) the coolness.

Townsend,,, badass musician,, but odd stage presence.

I seen Roth in the 80’s ,,, hard fkn Rocker,,, but a long way from the Pantheon.

for me, music is about MOODS.....  I like it all    and I am pretty danged MOODY.

Pete Towshend comes to mind. as a top of the line Rocker.

but then I have times when I listen to John Denver or Anne Murray..

BEATLES,  together are the best band.

even Rod Stewart should be on the list

Way back when, my older sister was one of those girls In Love with Rob Stewart.  :)

I’m a bit younger than the Beatles, and must admit I never listened to them,,,, but I kinda thought that they were more of a Pop Music group,,, but I may be wrong, maybe they did  RnR?

i think u expressed it well with the Moods thing,  that’s the missing point,,, how we cannot rate the guys on a Best/Less scale,,, more of a horizontal thing...   sometimes there’s nobody like Waylon Jennings, then other times I wanna see Bowie...

Ok,, wonderful choices all, I’ll now reveal my choice,,,,, (drumroll in background)......

                Elvis Aaron Presley

                The King

Presley is one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of the 20th century. Commercially successful in many genres, including pop, blues and gospel, he is one of the best-selling artists in the history of recorded music, with estimated record sales of around 600 million units worldwide.[5] He won three Grammys,[6] also receiving the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36, and has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame.

Hard to pick just one...

So many greats... I would say Robert Plant, Mick Jagger, Elvis Presley, Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Cash (nobody mentioned him?), Bob Dylan, and Jim Morrison.

diverdude1:

I was bored one afternoon in Paris and I was staying out there away from tourist area to save money and I was next to that cemetery, Pere Lachaise, so I wandered around in there for awhile and found Jim Morrison’s grave.  I’m not really sure why I did that, barely knew who he was,,, but those old cemeteries have a weird/cool vibe about them...   especially French,, it’s like an ethereal outdoor art museum....
