Q: Old person VS Kid

I saw a traffic accident when I was standing at a bus stop a few days ago where an old man was crossing the road, and a woman on an electric bike with a kid on the back drove into him and went flying. The old man was unbalanced but didn't fall over and the kid was shocked and crying, but not seriously hurt.

Everyone at the bus stop blamed the old man. They all gathered round and yelled at him because the kid got hurt, even though I really didn't think it was his fault and the kid was fine. I thought this was kind of strange as I always thought that old people were the most respected and basically always right, even if they purposely flatten you with a steam roller.

So who are most deferred to in Chinese society? Old people or kids?

Its because the old guy didnt fall over. If he fell over and faked death he would be in the right.

In china there is no right and wrong. There is only victim and bigger victim. The bigger victim( most damage) always wins regardless of whether or not he/she caused it.

I know i didnt answer your " old vs young" question but if there is even a sliver of hope to get free money from an individual than any culture references take a back seat.

I think you're right Mike.

Unless he was obviously in the wrong, walking right in front of the bike or something with no chance of avoiding him..

There is not difference between old and young. All the inbetweens treat the old as kids.
