Q: Overweight baggage on domestic flights

Next week I will be getting out of here. Sadly it's not permanent, but a glorious summer at home beckons.  As Wuhan is an international flight black hole I am forced to first fly to a civilized city.  My international flight has a baggage limit of 30kg but my China Eastern domestic flight has a limit of 20, which I'm certainly going to be well over.  I've tried looking on the China Eastern website, but the website, like the airline itself, is just awful and totally unusable.

I've been in this situation once before and got away with 28kg on a domestic flight by playing the dumb foreigner and pretending not to understand a word they said until they lost patience and just checked me in.  But I don't expect to be so lucky this time.  Has anybody been charged for overweight baggage in China?  Roughly how much did you have to pay?

I reckon that if your domestic flight and your international flight are both with China Eastern, and they're checking your stuff in for all-the-way, you'll be ok for the 30kg from Wuhan.

I've got the same issue coming up next week.  Both my flights are with Sichuan Air but they do not have the capability to check my baggage through all the way.  Which means my first flight is domestic.  Which means I'm screwed.

To give you an answer about excess baggage....it depends.

A couple of years ago I helped a girl with her check in and she only had to pay Y200 for about 20 kg over.  And another time the girl had to pay Y1500 for only 10 kg over.

For peace of mind I suggest you get a Chinese speaker to make a call.
