Q: Parents of your students inviting you to lunch or dinner?

Yesterday I got invited by the parents of one of my students to lunch. I was kinda caught off guard and accepted. They took me to a fancy seafood place and I kid you not bought all types of clams, shrimps, lobster, etc...I don't even want to know how much they spent.

Here's the thing, though. They're sending their 16 year old kid (one of my students) to Canada to high school and then university. I've already helped the kid a little contacting different schools but now I'm seriously wondering what the parents might ask me next.

I'm screwed, aren't I?

If you go to lunch with them, expect to eat all the weird stuff like chickin feet and fish head. They won't only serve them to you, they will EXPECT you to eat and enjoy them, because in China all the disgusting stuff is saved for the most honoured guest!

Try getting drunk before you go: it will make it easier to stomach plus they will just think you're another funny foreigner, like Bill Cosby [aka Dr Huxtable]. Or if you're white, Jim Carrey.

ps. I have never met a funny woman.

You are so lucky, Alva! You're not screwed at all, it's the perfect opportunity to make moar friends! Grass is always greener on the other side of the white wooden face, like we say in Montana, 'Merica. You want to make less friend? Take the opportunity and go! If i were you, next time they offer you schrimps, i' would show them the "tap dance of the sea" show! The best that could happen to you is that they refer you to moar families, so you make even moar Chinese friend!

At first, when i saw your picture, i thought you were just another dreaded walking walrus, but i've realized you're a very lucky person (although you can be both!). I'm a bit jealous, I have to say, but I encourage you on your quest for moar moar friends!

It is a favorite way of establishing them as your benefactor and obligating you to them.

I wouldn't say your screwed. Business is business and there's only so much you can do to put him in the right path. Its up to you though to establish the right expectations and the lines you wont cross.

Like Martin said, never mix business with pleasure Wink

Do them a favor if you could, make same calls and do information collecting is easy for you but really hard for them. They will help you and be your friends. If you could not, just say no in a good way.

It's the world of guanxi - you dove straight into that one. Can't back away now, you savored that lobster flesh, now you have to help their kid.

The problem stems from Chinese people really being insistent - sometimes it just seems like they won't take no for an answer. It's part of their negotiating spirit. Have you seen old people almost bickering over seats in buses or subways? They're negotiating to let the OTHER sit.

You're just gonna have to toughen up, Alva, if you don't want to get stepped on Wink

A:I think it depends on the size of city you're in, but yes, I have been treated better than others. For example, this weekend, I went with some friends on a trip to a town outside of the city. On the bus, there wasn't any sitting room for a while (it was a 40 minute trip) and when a seat opened up, my friend said I could sit down. But I noticed there was a woman standing right beside me, at least twice as old as me, and she also said I should sit down. I said, no, that woman is older than me, she deserves the seat. The lady said it was ok. I asked why, and my friend said that she said it was because I am a foreign teacher. I said, no, you can take the seat, but that woman is older than me, she deserves it. She did get off two stops later, so I guess that's why it didn't bother her, but still. How in the world do I deserve more respect than that woman? Blows my mind. Why should I get stuff just because I'm a foreigner? Honestly it doesn't just blow my mind, it pisses me off. Later on that same bus ride, I did get a seat, but there weren't really any other seats opening up. So a few stops later, I said my friend Alice could sit down. Honestly, she looked more tired than I did. Two stops later she hopped up, but I said she should sit down longer because I did. On the way back, I almost got spit on by an old man. Fun times. -- Jnusb416
