Q: Photocopy of degree
Just a question because of something that happened at work today.
A new employee at the school I work at was asked for the original copy of his degree today, not one other teacher even has the original copy of their degree with them in China. Everyone else in the school submitted a photocopy.
So do you need the original copy of your degree?

I don't know anyone who carries around their original copy of their degree with them, especially in a foreign country.
Who wants to risk damage or loss, especially as it might not be replaced?
I was asked, but replied truthfully, that it was at home in a safe place, and they would have to be satisfied with a copy.
No, you don't need the original.

Shenzhen & Shanghai you need it, and other cities. Been there done that, you should NOT speak for all cities in China, only yours. I'll over look this error Sorrel, but only this time. This kind of wrong information will cause a lot of people to make terrible mistakes. Didn't you think about that?

point taken, however if my original degree is damaged or destroyed, it is not replaced by my University.
Not replacing such lost/damaged/destroyed documents is common practice in Universities in my home country.
I for one am not going to give mine to a company or school or anywhere that i can not trust to take care of it. I have seen too much of the careless attitude in China to such foreign documents by local staff.

Agree with ironman. Some require originals. Not sure where you attended school, but most universities registers office can always provide certified copy of degree and transcript
Not photocopy, but scanned file. I have scans of all my diplomas and docs., and I've never been asked to show originals.
Release letter (from old employer) must be submitted in original.

In Shenzhen I had to show my original to the Labor department. But they didn't even look at, or scan it with any special light, they only wanted to see that I had it. But every city is different.
I never show copies of educational achievements. If they are not happy with scanned copies then they can keep their job. Even the copies are embossed all over, and the passport important numerals are opaque.
I've met the darker side of China on a big scale. Now for personal security and any possible Identity theft I cover myself. Maybe OTT to some, however for me, I sleep better.
Never give the original copy to anyone, if you send a scan put a big fat watermark on it first using Photoshop.

Only give it to the Labor Department, they will give you a FEC book.
I came to Shenzhen fresh out of uni and my diploma hadn't even been mailed to me yet. I taught at a public high school. They did not require my diploma, so maybe it just depends on the school. However I applied for the job while still in America, so don't know if that matters.
I graduated from the University of Photoshop with a degree in Fraud Arts.
