Q: Possibility of getting rehired for a teaching job without the recommendation of the previous school

I am in a big situation right now where a coworker at work embarrassed me in front of our student's parents. The management will only give the person a warning and thats it.I filed my resignation in the middle of my current contract as  feel that I am emotionally safe in this school anymore. The school however, urges me to continue working with them but I cannot bear the sight of the very person who made me look like a fool in front of many people in our school. I gave my school two months to look for a new teacher but it appears that they don't want to let me go and I was told that I wont get any recommendation letter from the school.  Is it possible still to look for other job opportunities in the teaching field without the recommendation?I currently possess a residence permit which will expire by October 2013.

I would appreciate any feedback on this.

I've never found a school that required a recommendation letter.

As a side tip, when someone embarrasses you just brush it off if it's not serious and if it's a big deal then confront them immediately. It's a matter of face and honor here.

First, the answer will depend upon how much of a "relationship" your prospective new employer has with the authorities.  If you new job is in a different province, then I would say that the chances of your paperwork being "arranged" might be as high as 80 - 90%.  If the new employer is in the same province, then I would say that your chances decrease to 30 - 40% but still it might possible.  If you come from one of the Big 5 scheduled countries (United States, G B, Australia, New Zealand and Canada), then it may be well possible for you to exit to Hong Kong, or Macau, cancel the Z visa that you hold, re-enter with an L visa and have your new employer start the entire employment process over again.  If you are not from one of the Big 5 countries, that renders the Hong Kong run very problematic.

Next, you have been at the current job less than six weeks, I would say.  The employer must, if you and the employer agree to part, give you a Letter of Release.  The employer, in his or her right, need not, given the length of time that you have been employed, give you a Letter of Recommendation.  Your current Z visa/residence permit is tied to your current employer, that you should know. Your next employer will need to secure a new one on your behalf.

In your shoes, I would try to cut a deal with the employer -- if they are not happy and you are not happy, then try to agree upon a mutually satisfactory departure date.  I would try to buy the Letter of Recommendation from them -- money often helps in China.  If you are unhappy and they are happy, you might wish to try to find a middle ground.

I was once in a similar situation as yours.  The outcome was painful to say the least.  It's an ugly situation, no doubt, and you need to find a way to cut a deal.

can you dance like a monkey, talk like a parrot and act like a horse with a needle stuck in it's butt? IF you answered yes to at least one of these you are good to go!

personally it seems that you are over playing the incident, what did he do?

the type of schools that will accept you without a recommendation letter would probably be a worse experience.

if you really want to go that route, it would be best to leave the country and go through the entire process again.

my advice to you is to stick it out. many chinese teachers are extremely jealous of foreign english teachers. and because of the bully mentality that has become part of modern chinese culture (territorial disputes) many will try to bully foreign teachers but in cowardice ways. if you break your contract and leave he would chalk it up as a victory.

get him back. is he married? if he is invite him out to dinner, to smooth things over. at some point during the dinner get up to use the bathroom. then have a massage girl, that you previously hired, go to the table and give him a kiss. be ready to snap a photo and show the photo to his wife. that will give him a day of hell.

scout the restaurant thoroughly, make sure you can stay hidden while taking a good photo. and you would probably be best to take a video. or just take him out to a ktv and hire a ktv girl to play with him while you video tape it. make sure you search for a good girl to use. most are lazy and incompetent like any other worker in china.

crimochina:

after thinking about it, go the ktv route, chinese men are scared of women outside of the ktv setting.

i would not say that could be a problem if you are not from "the big 5 country". I have been working in China for 2 years and nobody never asked me for recommendation letter. If you are white there is not a big deal to get the new work- if your boss can get visa for You- what i mean here if he can get working visa ( i just heart that its really hard to get working visa for Africans!

Good luck, and really dont worry about finding diffrent job- its quite easy if you dont live in Beijing or Shanghai
