It depends what you want. I like the hard sleepers because I get to experience a lot of different types of people and get to observe all the interaction. I can only do this because I am with my partner and she can translate. Unless there are 4 in your group or you are prepaired to buy all the beds you will still be sharing your 4 berth soft sleep with others, but you will get a bit more room and a slightly better bed. I am in my 50s and tall but I find the hard sleepers OK.

depends on age, length/distance of journey... Xi'an on a hard sleeper, top bunk was 27 hours (many moons ago mind you) and let me tell you I sure wished I had a soft sleeper! But for anything say maybe 6-10 hours hard would be ok for me, more than that soft.
