Q: Random hostility or.. ?

Chinese people spit. Chinese people spit very bad due to their chronic diseases and their outdated mindset.

But then there are Chinese who will spit out phlegm out of their throat or at least make that disguising sound once passing laowai's back.

How do you control yourself to avoid saying something loudly against these low lifes?

Many dudes here are frustrated, they are craving for p*ssy since China lacks 30 millions women (officially, 40 to 45 millions according to NGOs).

This explains that, the xenophobia, the hostility toward WM/AF couples and so on.

I have applauded them before. Funny look on their savage face.

I sometimes  wonder how that action came to be part of Chinese life.  If there is a more widespread abominable action, I am not aware of it.

Depends where they spit. If it's into the gutter or the bushes, I'm fine with it.

If it's on the sidewalk, I'll give a dirty look and say something.

If it's on the bus, then I'm learning correct pronunciation for 'disgusting!' While giving the dirty looks. Fortunately, that's rare.

Robk:

Just say "bu wen ming de nong ming!"

Uncivilized farmer... that will embarass them.

Can I ask you why does it bother you as long as they do not spit on you?

Do you really think that whatever you do will change their approach, attitude and/or point of view? I doubt that.

Don't you think that by 'acting' you are just making your life and feelings more miserable?

And calling someone 'Uncivilized peasant' with apparently wrong pronunication (there is no g at the end of nong min) and probably wrong tones either will hardly earn you any appreciation or respect ...

I also do not like spitting but as almost everybody in China does that so the chance that it could change in the short period of time is virtually non existent.

What works well for me is to get over it ...

FeiluoCZ:

It's not about spitting in general but their sudden attempt to spit once they got you crossed over their back. Oops you are obviously Chinese who doesn't experience this. Check out the video where a jewish guy walks around Paris. Some blackies were did that "dry spit" too. Bu wenmin de nongmin suits well fo those guys.

Well I am not Chinese. I am Caucasian if it for some strange reason matters to you.

And I must say that I do not know if it happens to me or not because I pay no attention to it.

China is very safe country what concerns of violent criminality and therefore I do not feel jeopardized here.

And even though I am not Christian I pretty much agree that offending someone will rarely bring anything good to you.

OK - so you call them 'uncivilized peasants' and let's say they even understood what you said (what is not always guaranteed irrespective of your Chinese language level as they probably do not expect a foreigner to speak Mandarin). So what?

Now they will probably have a good laugh over the foreigner imitating some Chinese in calling the other people 'uncivilized peasants'.

Will that make you feel better?

Based on that what you said probably yes - ok, then go for it.

But I still think it's a bit childish behavior ...
