Q: Recommendation letter - who writes it?

I wonder who writes recommendation letters, HR or your "supervisor"? I mean if you wanna leave earlier and you give a 1-month notice your supervisor may be revengeful (very typical) and may hold a grunge against you for that and if supervisor writes RLs then it may not be written nicely..

So who does write Rec.Ls?

If you are leaving early (breaking your contract) why should someone write you a good letter of recommendation?

peter02:

Leaving earlier doesn't mean "bad person", there are various circumstances for that (your wife is pregnant and you feel it's better to move to another city, or increased pollution, etc.). Too bad that you think exactly like Chinese like there couldn't be any other reason except "bad".

it is not exactly "break" it, because your contract says you can cancel the contract with 1 month notice

RL is written in Chinese, which I can't read it.

They are all signed by the Principals of individual schools, so am guessing their secretaries might did the 'leg work'.

I mean at places like Wall Street, EF and so on - who writes rec. letters HR or your supervisor?

icnif77:

S. African DOS wrote mine at EF in 2009.

If you quit your job, 'cause Contract violations, Rec. letter isn't the paper you're looking for or you 'must' receive.

You should get Release letter and FEC Cancel Cert., which School is required to give you in 30-days after your last working day.

With both docs. your new employer will be able to extend your Residence permit.

What did you do in 10-years working in China?

Your 'minder' writes the recommendation letter - be that your FAO, supervisor, principal or what-not.

The "recommendation letter" is not a western version, where they are not allowed to say anything directly negative, but a simple, "Start date: End date. Would you hire this person again? Yes/No, Why? No why!" form.

And, I believe that they may hold a grudge against you as opposed to a "grunge."

OK, then what's the difference between release letter and recommendation letter?

icnif77:

First is letter, which states you don't have any obligations/debts to the Co. anymore, and second is the letter about your (good) work, and it's issued as 'recommendation to the new employer'.

It's nice to have Rec. letters with your CV as a 'boost' to the new employment.

At least, that's how I see it as Non.

I guess, Native English teachers can 'live' without Rec. letters, and without Release letter, you're looking at the exit from China and new Z application.

My advice for breaking a contract, add an extra month to the contractual notice. Agree to give them an extra month's notice on the condition that you will receive your release documents a month before you leave and that if the school fails to deliver that the release date is set earlier and the early termination penalty is not to be paid. (get the Amendment agreement signed and stamped ). Be sure to include salary payment info and time everything around pay dates (don't be stupid). This ensures a good release letter because they will most likely still need you. Under normal circumstances a school does not have to give you your release documents until about 2 weeks after your last date worked. After receiving your release documents , get a form from SAFEA for canceling your FEC, get it filled out and stamped by your school and return it ewith copies of your release documents and FEC to SAFEA, the receipt they give you along with your release documents are all you need to change jobs (some districts require proof of income tax but you do not need your previous schools help for that).

Chinese want to control you and face factors in also, so managers will often behave like abusive lovers. They like you so they torment you to show that they care. If you try to leave you are taking power from me so I will make you pay. Tread lightly and good luck.

Are you sure? It's gotta be in Chinese and it's not for some places in Europe or America it's for Chinese centers/companies.
