Q: Renting a hotel room for a month or more.

Before renting an apartment in a new city you just moved to, I find renting a hotel room for 3 to 4 weeks while you can look for a proper apartment is very helpful. A lot of the Chinese hotels will rent you the room at weekly and monthly rates. You can find these deals on websites like 58.com and such. Tujia.com is also good...its like airbnb. Just some words of advice.

This is a very informative post, biggj123.  Technically, under Chinese law, where it exists, a hotel room cannot be rented to a foreigner for more than a thirty-day period.  In some cities in China, the law is observed and in many others, it is simply ignored. In the end, however, I never found it difficult to secure a decent apartment in China, Shanghai included.
