Why not just apply for a new visa?  It would cost about the same as getting an extension.

First, be aware of the following:  the tourist visa (L)  has three different governing factors.  One is the number of entries, you have no problem there since you have an "M".   Another is the length of time the visa is valid for, in your case one year and for an example below assume your visa expires on 12-31-2012.  And the last is the number of days you can stay inside China on each entry, always a number multiple of 30 days, and for the example assume you have 60 days.

Now, if what expires if the length of time the visa allows you to enter China, one thing you can do if in China is to exit and re-enter on the last day (12-31-2012), and that will give you an extra 60 days of legally staying in China even though technically your visa has expired.

After you do that, if still want to stay longer, go to PSB at least a minimum of 5 days prior to expiration of your stay, and bring passport, ID photos, your registration form of address for visitors with local Police, and either a local bank account with a balance of 1000 yuan per extra day requested, or cash in the same amount.  It is very straight forward, and normally granted if all requirements are met.

BiLi:

I have all the requirements. But I am living on Social security deposit living in China. All I can show is my proof I receive funds every month on a certain date.I receive funds through a bank in USA. I have no local bank account. Will this meet their requirements. ---- must know by Dec.26.

Sorry, but the answer is no, unfortunately.  As said it is either a local bank account or cash on hand, 1000 yuan per day requested.

But in China nothing is cast in concrete, so you will not loose a thing with trying with what you hqave.

BiLi:

I have a one year multiple entry (every 90 days) Tourist visa.

My visa will expire on January 6 2013 normally counting all the days I have lived here on this year long visa. I entered China  on January 13.

But I exited  and entered the country the last time a few days early on October 3.--  90 days from October 3 is December 31.So you are saying I can go to Hong Kong and exit and enter again and gain back the week I lost by exiting early on October 3 ?

Even though my visa will be expired after December 6 ,I will still be able to stay 90 days from my last entry?

 please answer quickly.

So is that you have at present a one-year multiple-entry "L" visa that soon will expire and you want to extend it by thirty or sixty days?

Or do you have a one-year "L" visa that requires you to exit the PRC at the end of every thirty or sixty days?

I am not quite clear as to the question.

Like HappyExPat said, maybe, maybe the local PSB office will do it for you but you will be asked, I think, to prove financial stability, etc., etc ., and then again maybe not.

On the other hand, if that doesn't work, then there's always Hong Kong or Macau.

Re your comments above, if you can prove financial viability via a monthly Social Security Deposit, then yes, perhaps indeed, you may be able to get it extended.

The PSB require you to show evidence of at least 2000 rmb before granting an extension.

So the best thing is to open a bank account with a Chinese bank, I found the Bank of China very helpful and generally they have at least one person who can speak English.

All you need is your passport and your money.

You then will be given a bank card with Union Pay on it and with this you, can get money out of most ATM' s worldwide even in the Philippines, but remember to keep this 2000 rmb in and each time you extend your visa which will cost one hundred and sixty rmb, go to the bank because the PSB want to see an up to date bank statement and also they do not accept cash to pay for the extension.

I have a multi entry visa, each visit 60 days. I tried to extend at the end of the first visit but was told by numerous sources including the PSB that I could only extend it for 30 days, and the subsequent entry on that visa would be cancelled. I had to show bank statements, I think for about 24000 rmb. I decided to exit to HK, re enter, and am now on the 2nd visit of this visa and will be able to extend this part by 30 days (as there is no more visits after this to be cancelled). After all this I will exit again and apply for new visa. There was a clear discussion of this on Chinatravelguide or whatever the site is in the last half of December. Different PSBs may treat you otherwise, I would research which PSB might be best for you.

Just buy a new visa before it extends simple.   If you are an American you dont even have to fly back to America to get it done.  There are people who work with the Chinese Consulates in America who can do this for you.  Just go to the Chinese Consulate website in America and ask them if they have any other workers or partners their who can go there for other people and get their visas for them?   I met a man in Chicago who told me he has done this for 7 years .  He only charges 40 US dollars for multiple visas.   All you need to do is mail your passport, invitation letter, application, two passport photos and mail it to them via UPS.  If you dont trust a stranger to do it, than can find a friend or another foreigner in the US.  Pay them gas money and give them pay them a little for their time, mail the documents that you would normally need if you were to go to the Embassy yourself and they can do it for you.  YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED to be there 99 percent of the time.    Very easy and saves you all this hassel and in America you can get the F or L visa for one year, multiple entry 90 days, and it you pay them buy money order or credit card of 170 US dollars for same day rush service.  You cant pay them in cash or by check.  They wont accept it.   I hope that helps.
