Q: Run of the MIL

The Chinese MIL, a favorite among China bashers. However, we've never had a thread on "What is the strangest thing about your MIL"

I'll go first.

My MIL turns off all light when she showers. Her bathroom does have windows, but they are all frosted glass, there is also curtains, and it is on the second floor and the windows are facing pretty much nothing but trees. Sure you could have a perv in the trees, but who would really want to peep on the old hag. ? Whenever we come to her home at night and there is no lights, the conclusion is "either she is not home or she is in the shower"

I dont know my MIL that well. Live in different cities. We get along great, but thats because we dont see each other often, so everyone is all overly polite. But she has one thing.....

She stares, not like the rude farmer stare we all know so well. And  with a smile but stares so intensely. It really made me uncomfortable because she does it all the time. I told my wife about it. And she does it to her too. They always tell her shes freaking them out. I guess it means im family now. And its true, well all be having dinner and shell just be staring at my wife with a smile on her face for like 15 minutes, till my girl notices and tells her shes being weird.  They are all used to it, but I sure am not. Creeps me out. Like she can see me naked or something.

Lol, I get that Death Stare from the MIL as well.

Her dad is 100% cool, though.

My MIL does the same thing (lights off in the shower)!

Can't hit the garbage can as if it has a phase-plasma shield over it (and the surrounding five square meters).

Puts all of the bowls, chopsticks and cups into the vat of 10W-30 for me to wash.

Can't put a single lid/cap back on a bottle of anything and can't put anything back where she got it from or where it should go.

Wants dozens of pictures of her grandkids but doesn't want anything to do with them otherwise...

Said she would retire to live with us and help take care of the kids so my wife can go and work full time, "changed" her mind, works, rents out the family apartment (of which my wife is 1/3 owner) but won't pay a cent of the rent income to my wife.

Mike, you offered to buy my wife and MIL from me...well, the MIL is for sale if you're so inclined.

More! More! When she does watch her own grandchildren, she has that glazed look like they've hypnotized her and ignores their knife-play and destructive tenancies...buys 2K RMB worth of toys from the toy market in GZ to send to her sister further north but cannot even call her own grand-kids on Children's' Day...threatened to commit suicide if I did not grant her an audience when me and the missus got married (she was opposed to the marriage because she could have got a better price from a Chinese "man".) Refused to attend the wedding party (see previous). Threatened to go to my (then) place of employment to raise hell until I provided her with ample proof that she would be physically removed by security and that my students were behind me 100%
The reason why my wife has 1/3 ownership of the family apartment? MIL connived to get my wife's paternal grandmother (very old and losing her mental capacity) to sign her share over to my wife, but if my wife wants to exercise her share, "you can take me to court."
So yeah, you marry the girl, you marry the family, "for better or worse."

I think a MIL alone sounds like a poor investment.

Not put things back, no lids on anything. Got those too.

Yeesh, your MIL sounds like a scheming, money grubbing, dark-hearted old hag.

Or in other words... a pretty common MIL for China.

When your MIL dies, you better burn the body. You don't want it coming back at a White Walker! (watched too many Game of Thrones episodes today).

Mine hide things.

She also does the "no lights" thing. The bulb went in her bedroom and she went a year before she let me put a new one in.

My MIL is okay... I haven't paid too much attention to her but she is extremely emotional and cries with her kids don't do what she wants. I think it is a form of control... Chinese parents usually play the humiliation or guilt cards to get their kids to do what they want.

I don't see her often, so hard to say strange things she does. It's not her but it is her side of the family that annoys me (my MIL's side). My Chinese aunt (or AIL, MIL's sister) is a wack job. She sells drugs and always goes to our hotel room to ask to take a shower on various occasions. One time, she showed up at our place and asked to stay a week or two with NO NOTICE. Her daughter did the same thing... She also ran an illegal lottery and I am pretty sure she poisoned her husband because he didn't make enough money and humiliated her... Quickly after he died, she remarried... left the guy and then remarried again...

She always says me name with that annoying Mickey Mouse tone... and when she is trying to be polite, it is extremely fake. She also taught her kids horrible parenting skills that I don't even want to go into because they are just really crappy.

My wife has a bit of a crazy, annoying side to her and I wondered where it came from because my MIL and FIL don't do it. When I met my AIL, I figured out who passes on the crazy-nutjob gene.

My MIL is ok, a little a simple, a little naive, but  a nice enough person. FIL on the other hand is one of the biggest assholes I have ever met. Just allround awful person.

My MIL is taking care of my sister-in-law's child while she works. That kid was so dirty this winter I finally told her to wash the child or I would. I don't know what her excuse is. They have hot water and two bathrooms. My SIL is a bit simple and permed her two year old's hair. I tried her the chemicals are not safe for a child that age and a Chinese perm, can you imagine what they put in that? She tried to act like I didn't know what I was talking about. So I went in the internet and showed her that it was dangerous. Not to mention the kid was crying when it was being done my MIL told me. I feel like I'm dealing with people from 100 years ago. My FIL is nice.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
