WTF
The fuerdai weren't ever the kings of Sanlitun, they showed up but never were the center of attention, foreigners and girls alike didn't give a damn about them. So obviously that place was disharmonious and hurt many Chinese feelings, it must disappear!
We've had the same problem in my city, one place owned by a Canadian dude that became very popular with foreigners, then with your average locals, then one day our local fuerdai saw that and showed up with their obnoxious behavior.
No one there gave a damn about them so they became frustrated and one of them started to mess around with foreigners who just ignored him. One of the fuerdai lost it and started a fight with foreigners, got his butt kicked and was banned by the owner.
Several days later, police raid, the cops went out of their way to find an excuse to have the place closed down, did urine tests and turned the place upside down, couldn't find anything, left with a bitter taste.
For several months after that there were regular police raids but they never found anything, they eventually gave up and the place was never so busy than it is today. No more fuerscumbags and the area is new with many Chinese businesses so they can't just demolish it.

There was a pub that opened up in a city I lived in that was pretty good, as in it was like a restaurant / pub rather than a bar / nightclub type of thing.
Good music that wasn't too loud, friendly atmosphere, great food, couple of pool tables...from the start it was pretty much only foreigners who went there and it was a great place to meet with friends and hang out. It quickly became very popular with Chinese people who liked the laid back atmosphere, maybe had foreign friends, were often well educated, civilized and seemed to appreciate having a place to go that wasn't like the normal obnoxious night club.
Then the fuerdai wankers found the place and they were their usual loud, arrogant, spitting, showing off crude selves. They no doubt spent a lot more money than the other patrons and I suppose the management thought this was the new market so the place changed almost overnight into somewhere you couldn't talk to your friends because of the crappy Chinese techno being blasted at full volume, the pool tables disappeared and became a dance floor and it was just another shitty bar full of insecure dickheads with an attitude.
People would ask what the hell happened to the music - can you fix it and just got ignored. Whenever some idiot started trouble the staff looked the other way and let it go.
When all the regulars started disappearing the manager actually called a lot of the foreigners to ask why they weren't going anymore and most people were probably honest enough with their answers but it didn't make any difference. The rich people had arrived (attracted by the foreign crowd) and they had to be pandered to because .. they were rich !
It closed down not long afterwards. I remember hearing about the manager calling a lot of my friends asking them to come and hang out there for free beers.

very similar experience to Stiggs... had a cool Irish pub open up down the street from where I was living. A couple Irish English teachers used their recipes from home and helped run the place in exchange for being able to hang out and eat/drink there for free. The place was making tons of money for awhile and was full of foreigners. Great food and fun atmosphere. Then what happens? All of the suddenly 80 percent of the menu isn't available on a given night and local obnoxious assholes take over the place. They even had a sign outside advertising happy hour but wouldn't honor the happy hour price for me even though I could read the Chinese characters... finally agreed to honor it when I wouldn't budge. I wonder if the place still exists. Why can't they keep going when business is great and not cut corners? Primitive short sighted thinking...
lived in several cities in China over the years, it is very frustrating to not have a local pub to have a beer and go home for dinner. Age and family obligations sort of make night bar drinking disappear but having a place to relax and enjoy a pint is something i really miss in China.
These people are so self absorbed, i suppose socializing and meeting people while having a beer is just too much trouble.

That's a shame, I had more than a few good nights there when I was in Beijing.
This will be hard on the gay Chinese even more. Many of the homosexual bar hoppers in Beijing came to the foreign bars because they were accepted and did not get any harassment or backlash. the locals are not so accommodating at their bars.
I was always confused by this. The rich arseholes are attracted to where the foreigners drink, be arseholes, foreigners find somewhere else. Repeat ad infinitum. Why do they insist on turning up where foreigners are? Who do they think they are going to impress with their gobby arsiness?
