Q: Shenzhen or Xiamen?

Trying to decide where I go to teach this summer. I want heat, and I don't want a city that's lost and where people just stare at foreigners. I want something where there are foreign restaurants, easy access to foreign products, etc...

Shenzhen I heard was very industrial and close to Hong Kong, Xiamen I heard was quite nice, but isn't it a little far away?

Thanks for the feedback!

Depends entirely on what your preferences are.

Do you want a busy, ugly, industrial city, full of business opportunities, or do you want a really beautiful coastal city (Shenzhen is also a coastal city, but being the 4th largest industrial port in the world, swimming there will have you growing a third arm in no time), with the amazing Gulangyu island in front, with less people, but also perhaps less business opportunities?

Both have identical weather, both are close to big metropolis (Hong Kong and Taiwan) and really nice people.

Yo Anonynmouse!

u should try Zhongshan or Zhuhai, they're in the dirty south of Guangdong prov, and both have good facilities and amenities, and best of all NO PEASANTS STARING.

Plus (big bonus), they're 90 mins or less away from HK by ferry, which is only 120 kuai.

Weather is good, close to the sea, nice food, good wimmen... what's not to love!

I live in Xiamen and although it is a typical Chinese city, the locals are NOT big starers. I would difinitely choose it over Shenzhen...

CHINA related answer: In Zhongshan I think maybe Shiqi is "ok" but.... Xiaolan and Guzhen are shit holes with slack jawed idiots... Horns none stop honking pointing, staring, idiots... That's my opinion of Zhongshan CHINA For Guangdong I think Guangzhou is likely the best spot...

Shenzhen,
advantage: maybe no one will stare at you. many foreign restaurants, near HK.
disadvantage: people are rude. city is crowded. the bus station and subway can easily drive you mad.

Xiamen.
advantage: peace. people are nice, the traffic is good.
disadvantage: maybe the olds and the children will stare at you. you are easy to get lost in the Gu Lang Island, but it's like an adventure.

Shenzhen is the best busy city, we've got too many open jobs out here due to HK shutting down the chain of illegal F & L visa teachers. So I'd say 40% of those illegals are long gone and 25% of those jobs are still open here desperately trying to hire new guys legally.
