Q: Shocking to hear!!!

I am a Nigerian, a female. I speak very good English, have a B.Sc degree, teaching experience and presently working in an internationally acclaimed five star hotel. I was very glad when I discovered there were lots of teaching opportunities in Asia and decided to apply to some schools. However, I realized that this issue of being a non-native was really SOMETHING TO CONTEND WITH. I was very amazed and shocked to realize that RACISM is still so much in existence; else, how can you explain “White only” adverts? A native English speaker who is “black or colored” has slim chances of being employed not to mention a non-native speaker. Well, I only felt “so much ado for world peace and unity”. I however have few questions for Asian employers: “Do all natives have teaching ability? How would you feel if people from your country are denied contracts / employment, because of their skin color or nationality? “Is it not right to employ people based on merit?
Chinese, Koreans, Japanese and the likes are always in my country desiring one trade agreement or the other. If Nigerians and other non-native countries should decide not to trade with them because they aren’t “true white” how would they feel? We need each other across the globe; let’s stop making life difficult for one another.

I apologize this happened to you. It must be incredibly frustrating.  Just know that there are countless africans here in China doing very well with good jobs. It is obviously more difficult but the jobs are out there.

Yes, China is horribly racist, but employers are not alone in the blame. They are just puppets of the parents with money.  Ignorance is nation wide. Just do your best to show them how good you are.  Come , make money, dont spend a dime here and send all the money back home. That will get the suckers!  oh and make sure to make all the Chinese feel truly unwanted back in your hometown.

Walk by them and after they pass yell " ni hao!"  then laugh hysterically and walk away while taking their picture.

Very well said Mike. It's encouraging for her and anybody this much frustrated under such circumstances. You need to be feet on Earth and  less emotional, otherwise all this it will put you down for long time until you stand up again for yourself.

Because a white face is good advertisment, school needs to bring profits.I had an English friend h hired a Russian to teach English but I do not think he is qualified. But even not considering about the skin,Negerian is not qualified to teach English as it is not your Native language.
Do not take my words offensive.I just state the fact.

DrMonkey:

Maybe you should do some research about Nigeria, the languages spoken there, and history of Nigeria... Like many countries in Africa, Nigeria as it is now is the result of decolonization, and is the nation of *many* different ethnic groups, each with their own language. Nigeria was part of the British Empire, so naturally, they use English as a common language, to cross the gap between ethnic differences. So any Nigerian with a bit of education will speak English much, much better than your average college graduate here.

Edited after Mike's observation, I mixed-up Niger and Nigeria

But we can not help with weird things happen sometimes.I got hired before by an Australian company because the boss found me attractive and wanted me to be his lover. But I quickly ran away.

Another company wanted to hire pretty women as Asian sales director and they got interested in me.I did not want to be hired because of my beauty so I refused this job interview.

Many company hire good-looking women to work in sales area,I personally find it is offensive and not comfortable to take those jobs since I do not want to be hired because of beauty, will be better to be hired because of the qualified working skill. But corporates want to make hugh profits, and ppl like doing business with pretty ladies and hot guys sometimes.I know it is not nice and decent, but it is how many business goes around now. But I liked to watch football because the men look hot there.

I never had a native English teacher in my life, and I managed to learn English just fine. There is more to being a language teacher than simply being a native speaker.

@mike Woooops, I should have written Nigeria (English-speaking country), not Niger (French-speaking country). And I had to check on Wikipedia about that, because I completely forgot about the difference laugh

@Bravelife You can check on Wikipedia, English is the official language of Nigeria. So English is their native language.

DrM - just because it's an official language doesn't mean squat!

Canada has French as an official language, and so many Canadians can't say a word of it. Similarly, Switzerland has Romansk as an official language, and less then a couple of hundred thousand know even a few words of it.

I'm just saying - 'official' does not equal 'native'.

Chinese employers are fickle and dull. They are changing slowly but racism will always exist, especially in a country as xenophobic as China.

It is unfortunate, but there are schools that are looking for quality over skin-color. If you have the merits and the determination, you will find one. These barriers are meant to be broken and no gate can hold against a persistent battering ram.

Ok, we'll see what we can do about it, and because one favor deserves another, when and how can you help us stop the trend of Nigerian children soldiers? I feel this is really something to contend with, so before we fix the this ethnic job market issue please return to Nigeria and free and educate the aprox 85,000 children soldiers. If you do that I will help you spred the word that you are in fact a great teacher, I'll stand infront of the Gov office and make a speech. So I wouldn't expect China to fix their issues until Nigeria starts to fix their own problems.

Not angry haha, just making a point, there's no reason to complain about something that can't be fixed by posting it. As for the right, read up on history, I believe its under unsolvable issues.

@ DrMonky, I wish you were right, but my country (The U.S) and president (Obama) always seems to be the nation and nationality that tries to solve world problems. But I wish we weren't.

China is all about exterior appearance, with no attention paid toward actual content and quality.  A great example is our own resident Chinese, white loving, mascot Vicky (Bravelife).  Follow her posts and you will understand how a great number of Chinese parents feel.  They only want a white face in front of their children and not much else matters.  The people who can afford a foreigner teachers are mostly about pretension and face. This prejudice can be overcome, but my contention is that it isn't worth it.  Unless you're already invested here, why bother?  Even Vicky is trying to find a way out.

We can at least use these spaces to support Bobby Bolls, that poor guy that got cheated by his own group for supporting what he thought was a noble cause! Bobby was apparently some noble do-gooder who joined some CFTU group taking about how it is discrimination to deny jobs for teachers without degree certificates. He was very naive but what happened to him wasn't right either. racism is on the rise every where.....  in this world there are slim chances of being accepted for you skill, intelligence and education. my friend and I belong to the same home town, nationality and origin, we both applied for teaching, we gave trials as well, everyone considered me to be better in it, they asked us to leave and told us will call us back, later my friend got the job.. the reason was he is white skinned, short, childish look,  and i am brownish, tall, mature kind looks... his accent, grammar, vocabulary and sentence production was so pathetic that for a month i prepared him the lesson and taught him the method to teach...  shit and fuck happens every where.... this bubble will soon pop up but we might  not be here to give our services. i know an American guy from LA , he used to drive container truck back in USA and passed his high school with very pathetic grades as he used to describe himself, he said i m totally zero in education, but surprising fact is that he is doing teaching job of 15000 yuan per month with all the perks. he used to say journey from driver to teacher ------sound like porn... and would laugh non stop than.

matter of fact do not lose courage and hope, you will definitely fit some where. every rejections leads to a much better destination. pray for good luck always... kick balls of every chinese guy you meet.

Anonymous (why make this anon by the way, are you trolling?) I'm not trying to defend any school here, or justify anything, I'll just say it like it is.

Yes, people here will judge you by your skin color rather than your qualifications and skills. That's a given and won't change anytime soon.

But, schools who can get you a proper legal visa can only do it if you are from certain countries. Nigeria isn't one of those countries, even if they do want to hire you some things are out of their control.

So to sum it up, this Anonymous person is working illegally or trying too.

Not only the color requirement but lying is also required. Refusing to lie about where you come from, will make the school reconsider about hiring you . smiley

I remember my friend was told to lie in EF about grammar and or not to teach it at all and avoid questions about it.

If you've got the right qualifications, you should be looking for jobs in the right places. Better universities will look past colour and nationality, and look for ability and qualification.
