The massively popular show baba quna'er was canceled one or two weeks ago. For the unfamiliar, it was a show about celebrity fathers and their children traveling around China and having fun. It was good TV, and nice to see fathers spending time with their children. Some of the children became celebrities themselves.
It has been canceled because the government believes the show could do hard to the children' mental health.
Children are allowed fame in other countries to varying results. Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes have not fared so well, but Emma Watson and Natalie Portman seem very well adjusted.
If anything, the celeb parents should be educated in parenting. Exposing their kids like they do is self promotion and serves no purpose to the kids. Anyway, the ban is in place, a shame, I actually liked the show, despite naturally being heavily edited and no where near a real representation of the actual scenarios they are supposed to be in (based on a couple of camera man glitches e.g. a dessert away from civilization had a highway right next to it, could have been a sandbox for all I know)
The China model, of discouraging specific "bad" behaviors rather than encouraging good behaviors is sadly expanding across the globe. Small shitty developing countries sees the strict media control as one of the tools China has used to gain economic growth without having to empower the people through democracy.

I think it's more in line with Papa Xi's admonition that Chinese youth should be prepared for hard times ahead...seeing as how he apparently wants a return to Mao's 'fun-in-the-sun' times.
On a personal note: when I first came to China, TV programs were what I thought they'd be - family and community orientated (a la Lei Feng). Since then, the flashier shows replaced them (a la Dynasty) and suddenly everyone wanted the life and lifestyles that they saw portrayed on the boob-tube (now boobless-tubeless boob- LCD/LED/HDTV).

And again, the double down-vote proves my point.
Oh, ScotsAlan, where art thou and thine White Knight brigade to save us from the trolls!?!

I was trying to upvote by the way. I think your point is right on, Next the show with the Chinese couples traveling around the world will get banned for showing how great foreignland is.

If they can stop the creation of Miley Cyruses and Justin Biebers then I say it is a great plan.
Seriously that show got banned? It was extremely popular with my wife and students. This government is run by morons. How can you make people hate Japanese and support your takeover of T. when you're the one fucking their favorite TV programs. Pretty soon the mainlanders will be supporting the government of T. as the rightful rulers of all of China.

For an obviously "scripted reality tv show" it is pretty innocuous but I wholeheartedly support the ban because of the theme song. The day I was walking to the bus stop and found myself whistling this song almost caused me to walk into the intersection without looking....deliberately.

.. and people say that subliminal messages are not real :D
My short answer: BAN THEM FOR LIFE
What is seen now that only kids of rich famous Chinese will be the ones who will substitute them. It is not fair for those, who actually got real talents and want to have a chance without sleeping with producers.
