This was the topic of discussion in a class I had. I think that it definitely essential, but 2 of 3 students disagreed, citing examples of low scoring students who opt to go to a vocational school or find work themselves, or examples of poorer families not being able to afford high school tuition (i never got to ask them about the governmental aid for students in that situation).
The students who didnt deem high school necessary focused on the how much of education is not applicable to many people's job's requirements. While my arguements were based on the benfits of a well rounded education.
So what are your thoughts about it for China?

I think it should be compulsary, especially in the case that lots of Chinese lack the basic morality and manners at present.Education brings people not only money and rank, but also ways of thinking and the basic morals of human, which i think are more important than knowledge itself. As thought and self-cultivation will affect a person's whole life while knowledge will change with time.
HugAPanda:
what are you considering basic manners and morality? Compared to? Western standards? Or Chinese standards?
chenhan:
Western standwards. There are many merits Chinese could learn from westerners, vice versa. Both should learn from the opposite, don't you think so?
GuilinRaf:
I am not so sure an academic education gives one "morals". If that were the case, "white collar crime" would be almost unheard of.
HugAPanda:
China isn't western, and we as westerners can't expect them to change their habits to meet our standards unless they are in the west. Just as they expect westerners to follow their rules when in their home country. If they want to learn western habits and morals, then they need to enroll in a western-based etiquette school, which might not be a bad business idea.
chenhan:
Why should we tell one people from the others so clearly? We are all humans living on this planet. Each people should learn from the others as long as one does better than the others.
chenhan:
To GuilinRaf: What i said is on the universal level,of course there would be exceptions.I think academic education would affect one's morality indirectly ,it is affected little by little unconsciously.
I think it should be, but better rounded. Instead of "one size fits all" the powers that be should better tailor the education according to the students needs and abilities. For example, not everyone is suited for college. This does not mean that they are stupid or anything it is just a question of talent and drive. Well, these students rather than be demeaned should have better training for other fields that are quite necessary (i.e. I could not fix a leaking sink if my life depended on it!!!). If a kid knows by his scores, etc. that he will not be going to university, then why force him to learn to write term papers. He would be better off getting more training in disciplines that would help him do a better job learning skills and trades. This by the way, would be everywhere, not just China or USA. Sadly, this wont hapen any time soon save for a few "experimental high schools" and such.
Yes. When you are that age, high school should be required. Even if you plan on spending the rest of your life cleaning up horse shit, you should have a basic level of intellect. What if, later in life, you slip on the job and hurt yourself so much so that you can no longer continue in that particular profession and you have to return to school. Or you get a chance to be on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?"
I think one should go as far in school as they possibly can, intern, apprentice, and be a well rounded individual.
China's workforce is mostly unskilled labor. That doesn't create the high-tech economy that China's pushing for. More education is a good step in the right direction but making it mandatory would also require the government to shell out tons of money which I don't think it can afford to spare right now or in the near future.
