Q: Small/simple way to conserve enviornment..

For all the the talk about conservation here, I noticed that in BJ & here in QD, when the guys cut the grass they bag up the clippings, and I assume throw it in the rubbish dump.

In Aust. the clippings are called 'mulch', & they are placed in/around trees, flowers, plants etc. In fact I did the same in my own vegetable garden back home.

This has 2 important benefits;

1) it reduces evaporation, & in dry countries is essential.

2) as the mulch breaks down it adds valuable nutrients to the soil.

To seems me it seems a win ~ win situation.

Cant get any cheaper, its free! Easy/simple to implement.

And you are utilsing a valuable natural resource that would otherwise been thrown away.

I don't get it!!? It's not brain surgery..

Any other simple ideas to help the environment here in China??

Sorting garbages. There are TV spots about it. In Suzhou, there are dual trash bins for more than a year. Nobody ever gave a shit about it, you are already happy to see someone just throwing something in the garbage. Despite the daily cleaning by an army of grand-pa, my once clean district is increasingly soiled by trashes (plastic to wrap breakfast food and drinks). In my building, mostly foreigners, people do sort the trashes.

Using a bike, a muscle-powered bike. No oil or coal burned, no battery used (lead-acid batteries, nickel-cadmium, ...), just your own body sugar and fat and some vapor. For less than 10 km, it's a no brained. Not packed in an over-crowded bus, do some exercise, and reduce your fissile fuel footprint ! But yes, commuting, bringing the kid to school or doing the groceries on bike is giving less face than you petrol guzzler. And you have to pay attention to the locals who can't even drive on the right side of the road. Yes, all of them, and count on the police to not give a flying fuck.

Eating little to no meat. At equal nutritive content, meat production is much more energy expensive than veggies. So eat less of it, reduce your cancer likely hood, reduce your energy footprint, save some money and even loose a bit of weight !

Stop being a sissy and give up heating or air-con. It's useless, your flat is not insulated. Put a jumper on if it's cold. Acclimatize by doing regular outdoor sport and having a proper diet if it's hot (eating lots of rice and meat, of course you feel hot, digestion is not helping). Save lots of money while having a lesser energy footprint. All while being a tougher badass ^^

Cook at home, from local products bought on local market. Use the same solid bag to carry that home. Compared to prepared food, this will be healthier, will produce far less garbage, most of your garbage will make a good compost, and you reduce your energy footprint.

A reduced energy footprint can lead to a healthier and cheaper life. It's a win-win choice.

Recycling is big business in China. Even plastic bottles are salvaged by old aunties for resale. The trouble is that they often rummage through trash cans and leave a mess behind. The bigger problem is food wastage. While I see many people carrying back unfinished food in doggy bags, there are still many that don't. The leftovers are simply dumped. However, I do see food collectors coming late at night to collect these, I suppose they will end up as animal feed. Not a sight to behold but still, it's all part of recycling.
