With the heat turning right up I'm wondering who should get the lollies for the impeccable timing of this foray into the hotly disputed waters.
My prediction is that the ship will be allowed to pass without incident. Mainly due to the time of day...the arrival of it is imminent and It's Nap Time! Brilliant.
Back to you, Sir!

It was a clever move on Obama's part...
one ship, and a destroyer at that, not a fleet, not even a capital ship or an AEGIS cruiser that could actually do much. It's shows everybody I'm not weak, but I'm not aggressive either. It's like Speak softly, and carry a little bit of stick.
-Personally I'd send a carrier. And paint "suck on this" on the landing strip.
Shining_brow:
How did Obama come into this? I'm fairly certain Mr President didn't think this up, and was actually one of the last people to know about it.... until he signed off on it.

You think the Commander in Chief isn't given a heads up before annoying a nuclear power?
I would be very dissapointed if not at least on of the TLAs had figured out the concept of Nap Time and has that as a playbook
Similar to the concept of attacking Muslims during prayer time. Highly effective and efficient.
It reminds me of watching youtube videos of the open carry fanatics in the US.
"It is my right to carry my AR15 as I walk down this street, and there is nothing you can do about it".
To me, it just goes to show how powerless the average person is, no matter what the political system we live under.
It's like a bar argument spilling out into the street. Fine, let them go if they want to slap each other over whatever they disagree about, but if the dudes went to their cars to get their Glocks to escalate their fight... then wow... that puts me in there as an innocent bystander ( or bar sitter ).
Now, without taking any side, it always amazes me how a Government, in general, will be quick to throw some bar fighter in jail. Even if punches are not thrown, charges can be brought and time might be done.
But then those very same Governments, over a garden fence dispute, will antagonize each other by walking up and down the disputed fence. Not with Glocks or shotguns of course... oh no... they do it with ruuddy big ships loaded with missiles.
I think it would be a much better idea all round if they would put their guns away and go drink a bottle of scotch in the bar together..
royceH:
So one side would be like.."Say, bartender, this is damn good whisky!"
"It's scotch" says the bartender. "Far out damn, it's good scotch!"
And the other side would be saying, slurring..spectacles all askew, "Huh, it's not scotch...you've cheated me..again...it's not fair...this time we'll....we'll..." and he falls off his stool and lands in his pool of spit.
ScotsAlan:
Aye Royce... They would something to fight over. I have to say though, I think this sail by might have something to do with the China/UK thing last wee. Some western press are saying the US are not happy that China is getting closer to Europe.
rasklnik:
Your ability to turn almost every messed up thing China does into an attempt at America Bashing is almost impressive, although also kind of expected at this point, you skirt wearing commie.
Nothing will happen
On the other hand if it was a Japanese navy ship.......
Yes, this will be just 'another ship passing in the night'...The Chinese will huff & puff, but do nothing,
My issue though is, this will be more anti-USA fodder for the propaganda Govt. machine.
And all the zhong guo ren are so easily manipulated, just wander how many have taken the time to actually look at a map & see how far away these islands are from China's border. Not many, I'd guess..

One of the teachers at work bailed me up yesterday afternoon to seek my view on China commandeering disputed international waters and then building military bases on same.
What amazed me the most was that this was the first time in years any Chinese teacher has ever asked me any question at all!
It's a little bit rich of America involving itself as the voice of reason in territorial disputes considering it has about 156,000 military personnel deployed in over 150 different countries around the world. Although I do disagree with how China is applying itself to the situation.
If the UN hadn't have been made into an ineffective and toothless conflict resolution agent through years of partisanship and infighting on the security council (Russia and China) and years of undermining by successive neo-liberal American and British Governments then disputes like this might be solved through dialogue in a sensible and reasoned way.
Alas, this isn't the case. Instead we get gun boat diplomacy, sabre-rattling and a whole lot of my dick is bigger than yours macho confrontation. This would all be hilarious if there wasn't a chance that this sort of retarded military chest-beating didn't have a chance of turning into a war which may or may not end all life on Earth.

Now granted having military bases all over the world is silly and in many cases unwarranted. But what does that have to do with this topic? And conservatives are to blame for that.
America is bound by treaty to protect the Phils and Japan, what do you think about that? Do you understand the reality of history? I don't want to waste my with a history lesson.
It would be nice if we could live in a world where all countries could just mind their own business but in reality some countries are big and strong many are small and weak. When a big country is bullying and stealing from the weak another big country should step in and even the playing field.
America has done a lot wrong in its History and a lot right, this is the right thing to do.
Last, you are too simple minded to see the strategy at play here, 'changing the face'. Japan is clearly in the right but their history is continually thrown into their face. The Phils are just too weak with a lot of instability at home. So America has stepped in to be the big bad wolf. So it is not China vs Japan it's China vs your peoples number one choice to leave China for. That is impeccable political strategy.

Such a coincidence that you are from America and you support America. I suppose that when you salute a piece of cloth and mouth meaningless sentiments year after year it has to have some sort of effect on you objectivity. Not only do I understand the history, probably a lot better than you, but I also do it without the brain-fog of patriotism.
America isn't doing this to stand up for some poor defenceless country. In World War II America didn't declare war on Germany to save the Jews or liberate Europe - it did it to stop German hegemony in Europe. The South China sea confrontation is just the same.
America hadn't talked to my country in decades due to New Zealand saying no to nuclear ships. All of a sudden America is our best buddy again - all because New Zealand is in the Pacific and the Pacific is now a strategically important area of the world.
Don't give me that freedom, liberty and standing up for the little guy bullshit. We both know it's about money, power and real estate.

And its a coincidence you didn't address any of my points but instead brought up WW2 nonsense that is irrelevant to today.
