Q: Is Thailand off limits?

I'm just back from holiday in Thailand and had too many encounters with Chinese tourists.  The holiday itself was great, but the idiocy of Chinese people definitely had a few negatives for me.

I was having a serene massage on the beach and Chinese come in screaming at each other.  I yelled at them to shut up in Chinese to the approval of others.

A van share from the airport blessed me with the opportunity to spend two hours with 5 Damas.

A snorkeling trip with about 15 Chinese(3 of them could actually swim)  meant they massed around the back of the boat, holding on to the ladder and blocking everyone else's path on or off the boat.

Then, at the airport coming back to China, the queue cutting, arguments, and overall lack of awareness solidified what clowns these people are.

I will carefully consider holidays to countries that offer Chinese visas on arrival.  How about you?  Any similar experiences?

Yep, off limit. Blame the Thai government for sleeping with China. Thai people actually look down upon Chinese people, consider them as poorly educated and lacking manners. In comparison the Thai are some of the nicest people in the world, the land of smiles you know.

expatlife26:

yeah it's like with anything else...a few people stand to make big $ from visa-free travel for chinese tourists. And those people make sure that the public discourse on "china tourism dollars" is that they are completely invaluable to the thai economy which would collapse without them.

Same as with Hong Kong. There are certain people making a killing from letting in as many mainlanders as possible and selling them as much milk as they can carry.

In both cases the people exposed to the upside get to profit and the average schmuck on the street deals with the downside with no benefit.

Yeah thai people are really friendly, I notice though they don't like chinese as a group. But they HATE indians haha. Get a Thai started on India it's always the same things. And they may very well be justified in how they feel based on the behavior they've seen.

Yeah, I saw tons of Thais cringing at the actions of Chinese.  They smile, but it was obviously fake.

But.... I do acknowledge that there is corruption and bad business in Thailand as well as here! In some respects, it's no different to here!

Definitely a factor for me.

I don't plan my travels without having a look at the popular packages proposed in most mainland tour agents, and I cross these destinations or at least some hotels from my list.

Whenever I can I try to socialize with locals or expat outlet owners so I can drop a mail asking for the situation later. That's how I started to avoid places like Krabi which used to be nice and quiet a few years back but are now overrun and obviously not enjoyable.

Aside from the airport, I didn't see any tour groups.  I just saw families and friends traveling on their own.  I thought they might be better than tour groups, but they weren't.

before you travel, check out costs of living, crime and tourist hellholes at escapeartist.com, ive used the site for years, not a promotion, just good information. many expats use the site to plan retirement and travel, i have a place in phuket, hope i dont have to smell tofu cooking outside my window any time soon, maybe time to sell.

You have a place in Phuket?  I'd normally say, "Congrats!"  But now, "Oh, that's too bad!"
