According to my Chinese sources, 'Hong bao' (the red envelopes with money in them) used to be only given for marriages, funerals, and at Chinese New Year to children. Some people think it has become too commercial now as it seems to be everytime someone takes a dump they want a red envelope.
Has 'Hun bao' become a passive form of extortion from acquaintances and family?

I have never experienced such a thing. I have only given out red envelopes for weddings, birthday's, funerals and bribes.
Though, once, after a really good steak I took such a massive dump that I felt like I should give it a red envelope. But that is another story.
