Q: Is there any point to updating my wife's hukou now that we're in 'murica with no plans to return?
Her family insists on getting her Hukou updated, with our daughter added to the list. I keep insisting we're American (including my wife), and that we don't need to worry about it. Of course, her family is worried about it.
What gives?

You'll never when you or her need to come back to the land of dreams, but I would always update any form of ID, especially a Hukou. Even if you have no plans of return, who knows, God might have other plans.
I would get it updated. Might make it easier in the future if Hulkette wants to go to the Middle Kongdom.
Strangely the Hukou is the only authority respected in China. Of course it is also the only thing that is enforced in a way that influences everyday life. (Hmmmm, strange that enforcement can lead to people respecting something) There is a lot of talk about reform to the hukou system.
And the plan of "never returning" don't you want you Child to learn of her hermitage. Don't you think you wife would want to visit if a relative keels over? Never returning seems like an unlikely scenario.

My daughter isn't a hermit, though. She's forever forbidden to change her nationality, unless America went down like Bad Luck Brian at the prom. And I doubt we'd pick China.
Well, we don't plan on returning for more than 2 weeks at a time. We'd simply get visas for that.

chill dude, your daughter is just out of your wifes lady parts and you are already carreer-planning for her to not be a hermit.

I've already chosen her profession, future career path, etc. And I'll find her husband when she's 30 and hates men.
She can not be added to the hokou, as she is not chinese citizen !
If you add her to hukou here, daughter will be noted as chinese citizen, ( and it takes some lot of paperwork to be done) thus they may be troubles for accepting the US passport od ID , you know this sh1ts here 
At this point I would update it. Like someone else said you never know the future and plans can easily change. I could see several possibilities where she might actually come back to live however unlikely they might seem to be at this point. If for whatever reason she did need to come back to China it sure would be a nice (essential) thing to have. At this point she shouldn't be a US citizen yet so it shouldn't be a problem with the paperwork.
