Q: Is there anything left for me to eat/drink?

Yesterday some colleagues were telling me about different food and drinks which I should stay away from. Apprently Nongfu Springs Water (The one with the red cap that I ALWAYS bought) is the dirtiest water and the milk brand I alsways bought is the worst milk. I feel like if you pay attention to this stuff you're gonna end up not eating or drinking anything, and if you don't then you're gonna get sick from it... What's the deal?!

First they believe rumors. Brands, even Chinese brands, will get in trouble if they sell bad products. That is simple economics. After all you pay more for Nongfu springs.

Second they need a pure food and drug act badly

Third, yes you will die here. China takes years off your life

Fourth, the air pollution is a far greater threat than anything you put into your mouth as an adult.

Yup, reliable information on anything is a problem here. Interesting study on Nongfu public relation & medias
http://www.danwei.com/nongfu-spring-water-how-food-safety-scandals-affect-a-companys-image/

So... Made-up scoop by journalists looking for a good story ? War between bottled water manufacturers ? Just your average rumor, courtesy of a paranoid population (I mean, so much scandals, you get worried...) ? Yet an other genuine food scandal ? It's hard to know, where censorship meets face-saving and rather specials moral compass.

The fact is with a population of sheeple, and a weak rule of law, extortion via media is a problem here...

Scandinavian:

the Nonfu case was politically motivated as far as I remember, not just between producers of waterbottles.

Just ignore all of it. Chinese people dont read so 99.9% of their information comes directly from weibo which everyone knows is a bastion of truth. ( jeez my vocabulary rocks! Impressed? Ps theres a good chance i screwed that up , but let me have my glory)

If you start thinking about that crap you wont eat anywhere.
Its kinda like how a certain percentage of rat crap and bugs is acceptable in chocolate. We all know about it and eat our bars anyways.

Sadly, despite all the negative stuff that gets written about food in China, there's probably more chance of you getting harmed or killed by dodgy driving, poor building design & quality, defective electrical appliances or any one of the other myriad of dangers that lurk within this country. Sure, there's plenty of reason for caution but there's also plenty of room for measured common sense. Buy food from reputable sources and take note of preparation & hygiene - just as would be the case in any other country or region.
