Q: Thoughts on content over at the new eChinacities.com website?

Greetings Answers users!

As you’re probably aware, we’ve been gradually churning out updated designs and features and testing out new content ideas for the past few months over on the main eChinacities website (echinacities.com), and we'd like to know what you think of everything.

Feel free to voice your comments and suggestions below on what sections of the main website you visit most frequently or find most useful, what content you’re most interested in reading, as well as any content or features you’d like to see added or changed.

Your opinions matter a lot to us, and we’d love to hear what you have to say.

Sincerely,

adminanswer and the eChinacities.com team

Like many  websites, in my opinion it's too damn busy!

How about 3 or four pictures ONLY with headlines below and links to the full story, then text  links to other parts of the forum down one side where more sections can be found?

Think of UK Tabloid newspapers, one main story with a picture, perhaps a secondary story and everything else inside, (on a website these would need links on the front page)

When I get to a site that has too much on the front page I immediately turn off, and rarely look any further.

:

That's what I believe so too. It easily can turn into a sort of bazaar instead of a a simple main page website. Linking through to content it is the best. But on the main page little effective and essential information to keep the users interested to keep reading and post comments too, like headlines along with some pics, could be enough.

I spend little time on the first page because of too many tiny details that i don;t pay attention to. There's a serious need to make  it fluid, intuitive , appealable and easy to use.

i agree, lots of information, actually too much, would need to spend a whole day to explore the whole site. but hard to control that i think, its just that echinacities offers THAT much information. maybe can find a way on how to structure it in a better way

There seems to be less reposting lately, which is cool, because reposts are pretty lame. I like the articles about art, culture, fashion, etc because those are my primary interests. The city guide area is awesome because there's a lot of really invaluable information there, although some of it can be a bit dated. The blog section is a nice touch, too, because it's less formal. I'd like to see a way for authors to tag articles across the whole site and for users be able to subscribe to those tags via email or messages.

1-Would it be possible to see what movies are being shown in theaters?

2- Also, I often read about a cool event, exhibition, performance, etc. but on the actual day it is to take place.  Makes it hard for me to attend and (so far) impossible to bring a friend along. Maybe a weeks notice beforehand?

Thanks for asking!

Add more cities please

I am so sorry to tell you I love it. Maybe some truly artistic folks, which I am not, could make improvements in the site and maybe I would love it even more but if left as is I would continue to enjoy it. I always read the news in front which puts me in a good mood then I go inside and go nuts over the questions and answers. In my most humble opinion it 's  the best thing I have enjoyed since coming here two years ago.

To be honest, I almost never go to the main site.  The site, to me, looks like almost every other Chinese news site.  Too busy, too much information all squeezed together and too much bother to try and find something that might actually be useful.

I read some of the articles. I especially like the translated ones; they give insight into what's allowed to be reported on the Chinese internet. The topics of translated articles are also the most interesting on Echinacities. I don't really care for the newer format. I agree that it's too busy, which I suppose is kind of fitting? In the end it doesn't matter to me.

I have only been a member for a short period of time. I find the main site very useful for weird news etc. Always good for a chuckle. With regards to the amount of information, I do not think there is either too much, nor too little. You cover a wide variety of topics, and just because there is a lot,,, It does not mean we have to read it all. I pick and choose what I like to see. I wish there were more information in the classifieds however.

The design itself is very busy which can be very distracting.

If you want to be considered a reputable site, put the important stuff at the top, and less clutter.

Multiple links to the same features in multiple places on the same page is over kill. You have classifieds and dating and answers in 4 different places on the front page which is only causing clutter. Reduce those... the menu at the top and the panel down the right side is sufficient. You have it surrounding the articles and drowning out other stuff.

It's driving me nuts. I cant even form a cohesive opinion about it because it is so damn cluttered.

Did I mention it's cluttered? Want some help in aesthetics?

Initially I didn't like the change because I thought it was too busy and a bit time consuming to navigate. But now I don't mind it and I like the fact that I have a lot of choices on just where to go and what section to read depending on my mood and my available time. It's taken time for people to get used to it I think but I see more blogs appearing and more comments on articles other than the main one. I like the addition of the Weird News Section for obvious reasons! Articles written tongue in cheek are quite amusing.

I see one comment about covering more cities and I agree. Much of the news comes from the 1st tier cities and if  you want to know a little more about 2nd, 3rd and 4th tier cities then you probably need to ask about them in the Questions / Answers section. I guess the magazine just does not have writers available in those places. Pity about that!

I personally wouldn't mind more posts on events happening in Beijing. Saves me a trip over to cityweekend or beijinger, both of which I kind of loathe.

I like the city guide stuff here. It helps me plan my trips.

Have a look at this site:

http://www.awwwards.com/

It is an awards site for the best designed websites, all of the sites it links to are clean, uncluttered and easy to navigate. Perhaps you could point your web designers in that direction?

I found the same teaching desktop publishing in China. The Chinese students want to cram as many different fonts and pictures onto the page as they possibly can, with no regard to the usefulness of white space.

Web page design in China seems to follow the same principle.
