Q: Visa overstay what do you think will happen?

Due to no damn flights being available it looks like I’m going to leave One Day late.  Anyone here ever done this?  I’m going into HK by train from GZ.   And right now I’m on one of those 10 year L visas where you get a 60 day stay each time.  I’ll be one day overstay when I leave.  Will they freak-out majorly?

News which is nearly as good as Pepperoni Pizza at the Ladie’s Market in Mongkok.

Not a Darn thing happened!!   Can you believe it??  Neither could I !  I was getting all sorts of grey hair worrying about this, and not a darn thing really happened.

Ok, I might be over-simplifying a bit.  Let me go into detail a bit,,,,  I went thru the Guangzhou East Station Control Point to catch the late train to Hung Hom, Kowloon.  Behind the counter was the most strident, stringent looking officer I think I have ever seen!  And to top it off his supervisor was there with him,,, I thought I was busted for sure.  Well, I handed over passport, exit card and just stood there trying to look as respectful as can be, I had dressed nicely, necktie and everything.  Officer did his thing, and I was watching him closely, at first he just went through regular motions and I thought Wow! not going to call me out on this.  But then I see he gets this kinda shocked look on his face and I see him studying the passport stamps and computer screen.  Then, he turns to his supervisor, I thought, well, this is it, the game’s up.  They sat there and discussed about 5 minutes, occasionally giving me the Evil eye,,,, like I said, I thought game was up.  Well, they consulted like 5 minutes, and then he turns around and gives the official Exit stamp in my passport, I was shocked, and sooooo relieved!

And another funny thing is, they never said One word to me!  Either of them,,, didn’t ask a single, solitary question !

Well, that was an interesting experience for the book I’m trying to write about my days in China....

Did you glanz (polish) your shoes .... ?

I can never really count Business visa duration/length. I just don't understand and I think cops count 'entry&exit' days different, too. I am thinking, you might not even be late at exit this time.

On RP matter of late exit is clear&indisputable.

“Hey man, you need to exit in about 60 days, more or less. Unless of course you hooked with a hotty or something,,, in that case just chill,,,, all’s cool.   C ya,,, wouldn’t wanna be ya!”

I wrote about my overstay in 2012, I think, so you might read it already. Here we go:

'I came to Louhu some 10 hours into the no-more-RP-day and cops put me in the office for some 2 hours sit-down.

I was late at exit because plane in Tianjin was more than 14 hours late at departure and at my arrival Luohu was already closed.

I am guessing, cops might knew that plane delay was fact. I mean, I didn't just make-up some excuse ... But, still ... I got stern warning as 'Don't do it again!' and I was let go apparently without any record (but who really knows about that!).

Point was ''Chinese cops like to see laowai respects Chinese laws" and if not 'warning' for the lighter cases as 'delay at exit' is.

However, since then I prefer to exit always at least 24-h ahead of my last day.

Nothing will happen, they will ask you to sign a statement promising that you won't overstay again, they think that you disrespect them by overstaying for a few hours, even though the fault usually lies to the damn PLA controlling the skies and delaying civil flights.

diverdude1:

Partially my fault, I just figured enter Aug. 14, split on Oct. 14,,,, then my dumbass counted the days on calendar ,,, I’m supposed to get my ass outta here by oct 12.   So, I go to local shithole airport and they say nothing to SZ or GZ until 13th.   Idiot didn’t even tell me about HK,, I asked him,, but didn’t understand him,, he just made it sound impossible.  So, I booked to GZ on the 13th,,, nothing to SZ until next Monday.  Shit.  I bet with my bad luck they give me a fkn real hard time about this... I’ll definitely report back to u guys....

I overstayed about 10 days..cost me 500rmb, a missed $1000 flight and a week of missing a longed for holiday. NOT a good idea to overstay visas.

I do like to test the rules, and figured the incompetence at the border would not even notice the expiry date.... learned my lesson. BUT, I did just get a new visa with incorrect paperwork, by throwing a fit and blaming the local police. stupid, gutsy move, but it worked.

Best choice: Play Dumb.

Fill Out the exit card and hand it over and just act like everything is normal with a straight face. Wait for them to ask or tell you you are late by one day. Than if they ask or tell you about the issue, act a little shocked but try to be a pro and work with them.

Who knows they might just let you go through or just say be more careful.

diverdude1:

That was exactly gonna be my move.  I’m just gonna play dumb,  I’m good at that, and say,,, huh?  It says August 14,, so,, gotta leave by Oct 14.   But I’ll be nice and humble acting about it.   Well, I’ll report back to you guys soon.   That is if they have WiFi in the China prisons!

I've been in a similar situation before. Due to a leap year and some holidays, i just didn't calculate correctly. As Ironman suggests to you, and i thought i was all good anyway, but the officer spotted the discrepancy.

Of course i played the dumb laowai card quickly fillowed by the "oh my god, I'm so sorry" card, then out came the "I'm so stupid and embarrassed" card. They were all legit cards.

The officer was very by the book and professional. Called his boss over, i played the same hand. They let me through but the hoss grabbed me and warned me not to do it again and to be more vigilant in future. Lesson learned.

I'm stupid, so sorry, very embarrassed, i won't do it again....is a good strategy. I reckon you'll be fine. It's just a miscalculation and they should understand that and not give you too much trouble hopefully. Good luck mate.

diverdude1:

Thx wolf,,, I’m gonna do exactly that.  I hate math, wish they would just put the date, exit by {date}.  I’ll see u guys soon, one way or another...  flight for GZ this afternoon .....

I overstayed my visa by accident in May. They let me go with only a warning because it was my first time and it was only for one day. They told me that my second offense would cost me 500CNY per day.  It took four Chinese women to deliver the message to me.

iWolf:

Nice. So you are as condescending as possible to Chinese people but you don't have the decency to have a proper work permit. What you would wish for an illegal alien(which is what you are) teaching your children in America? It took 4 women to tell you that you are a moron? I don't believe that. It is obvious to Blind Freddie that you are full of shit and a moron.

Thx guys,,, yep, I actually did give Thanks.  It would have been really hard to leave here and start over from Square One anywhere,, I keep telling gf that all this paperwork stuff is good, but still two more big steps.  Getting the ABC Card (is that what we are calling it?) and getting salary from job. That’s when I’ll really breathe my sigh of relief!

yeah, I left HK day after collecting Z.  HK is cool in some ways, but like u said,,, too darn crowded for my tastes, and too damn expensive! 300+ hkd a nite for a shoebox hotel room?  That sux.  Plus a decent meal pushing a 100hkd.  Like u said, I’m more at home up here too,,,, lol,,, who da thunk it that a Redneck from South Texas would wind-up @ home in Commie Central,,, haha,,, the worlds a weird place....
