During the course of a conversation, I mentioned how my uncle, at the age of 50, had had a kid with his wife, 12 years his junior. Sadly, the kid is autistic. Now when I mentioned this, one of the people listening in interjected that it was understandable, that the mother had had the kid too late, and that it was to be expected.
Am I missing something here?

This is another one of the many Chinese myths in which they firmly believe. To me, they are just a bunch of Old Maid tales without one ounce of scientific evidence.
But within the circle of my local acquaintances, it seems that a Lady over 35 years of age will tend to bear less than normal children, and a man pass the age of 48 years of age will "loose" interest in sexual matters (and thus procreate defective children).
Maybe this is partially true, since it will explain why Viagra is so popular here. My first kid was born when I was 28 years of age, my last at 60. And all of them are healthy, intelligent, and I am very proud of them and their lives.

Well, I am obviously not 60 years old any longer, but since all equipment still works without any type of external help or blue pills, I never loose hopes of one day maybe having another one. Children are precious to me, and the perfect complement of a true love relationship.
My friend's Chinese wife told him to not drink beer for 6 months so he could get "prepared" to try to have a baby. He's 45 now. She told him it's because of his age and that since he is 45 his sperm is like water.

Six months might be a bit much, but they do recommend that men absstain from smoking, drinking before "ordering the baby". And to avoid excessively warm water in the scrotal area, but the above is for about two weeks. Six months...?
First Zoo, let me compliment you on your perfect grammar, a little too perfect if you had had a better job you'd make a good writer"JOKING", but myths and China go hand in hand, and in my experience it is the land of blamers. They never take into account many things that can go wrong during pregnancy including inheritance of certain genes that cause certain diseases, and my god, the entire theory of what a women should do during and after pregnancy is beyond anything I've seen in any other culture. Except the common rules that are pretty much common sense, I do believe everything else is rubbish
