Q: What annoys you the most in China?

Recently some Chinese [good] friends of mine asked me what the most annoying thing in China is to me,

after they told me of all the annoying experiences they had in the various parts of the USA.

I thought for a while and then told them that there was no single thing but I'd have to make a list..

Why not share your annoyances here with us...

I love Chinese people. I really do. I have lived here for 12, almost 13 years and have many lovely memories of the people here, many of whom went out of their way to help me. I am married to a Chinese woman who has been nothing but good to me. But fuck, these people are annoying as hell.

Living here a long time, a list of things that annoy me about the people......

Impatience. Chinese are just unwilling to wait for anything at all. What should be an orderly line is just a mob of people wanting what they want right now, right now. I stand up when people cut in line in front of me, don't do it.

About two years ago, I had to pay a bill at the Construction Bank of China. The place was full of people and there were only two tellers out of four windows. One of the tellers however had some asshole who just stayed and stayed and stayed for some reason which made eveything go slower. After an hour of waiting for business that was going to take me three minutes, and knowing who wan ahead of me in line, a woman walked in the door who was greeted by staff. Again, there was only one window basically to take care of everyone.

i knew what was going to happen next. Oh hell no, it won't. What should have been my number was her VIP number. Uh no, fuck you bank. I marched up and demanded service. The woman came up with her VIP ticket and I asked her if she farted in Chinese, and was again very loud and boisterous demanding service, which they gave to rid of me. If that bitch got ahead of me, I was in for another 20 minute wait. Later that year, I took a school job which told me that I needed a Construction Bank account to direct deposit my pay, which I refused for a long time, but then had to get in the end.

The English teacher who first taught the Chinese the term VIP should be tortured and have their balls cut off and burned in front of them. This would be to easy.

Banks in China suck a dick anyway. Do not lose your ATM card. If you do, you have to go to the branch where you opened the account. The nearest branch will refuse to help you. I have lost my card twice and went through this pain. One branch changed my account from another branch. What souled by two minutes and about ten clicks on a keyboard is really a half hour ordeal which includes pressing buttons, signing documents and other bullshit. Really, the Chinese banking system is 50 years behind the World. I bet even North Korean banks run better than this shit, if they didn't, the leaders would be shot and everyone sent to a camp.

Driving and traffic. Chinese are shit drivers. They just are. Again, it goes back to impatience. Cars pushing into each other, and no one willing to give the right of way. Then is the honking of the horns at anything and anything. Nothing but honking of horns. Just everyday garbage that back home would be considered reckless driving. I think it is better now than it used to be, but there is very little enforcement of traffic laws. People drive like morons because of this.

Chinese love noise and hate silence. One famous example I bring up is I was in an office working for a training school teaching adults and kids. I am in the office trying to brainstorm a lesson. The Chinese girl teacher comes in to do telephone teaching. What this entails is her calling a kid and asking them questions about the class and the lesson.

How she used the phone made me want to strangle her. She would turn on the intercom to the phone and when she dialed a number, was a loud BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP....then of course, we all had to listen to the ringing of the phone on hone other end. She would finally turn off the intercom when the kid answered the phone. I wanted to tell her the correct way to use a phone, put it up to your ear, you lazy bitch. You making noise disturbs the rest of us, like you care.

Chinese are loud talkers. I do not know if the people themselves are deaf or what, but any conversation has to be loud. I mean, use your inside voice. Chinese are constant chatterers.  In class, I have to deal with 30 or 40 students and in a large group like that is louder than most drunk bars on a Saturday night.

Everything here has to be LOUD. How many bars I have been chased out of because of the splitting sound of the music. It does not have to be so damned loud. Honestly, the great band ACDC should be a hit in China. Playing games on phones seem to require the sounds when sound is not needed. Sometimes I wish I were deaf here. I have seen deaf people in China and they seem to be the happiest.

I passed by this five star hotel today and since it is Christmas reminds me of the first Christmas here. We has passes to eat the Christmas buffet in that hotel. The food was KICK ASS. Just great holiday food. Anyway, we all sat in this huge ballroom place which probably held 500 people with a stage. On the stage they had a performance, which always consisted of LOUD, war splitting music. Not to say most of them were not bad. But then comes another performance, and another, another, another, another, another, another, another, just without stopping. The shit was always too loud to have a conversation with anyone at the table. I wondered when this shit would stop so I can talk to the others at the table. Never did.

My Chinese boss does not tell me of change of plans until the last minute. I learned this in my first job, when the boss would change the start time of school every few months without telling me. I thought he was just a drunk (he was, I got drunk with him). But no. Another famous example was when a college I worked at had a "sports meeting". However, it was raining and was going to rain the next few days. I knew it was going to be cancelled until the next week, but no one told me, and I went back to the wife's hometown just to be called late that night that I had class in the morning. Since I was 200 kilometers away, that wasn't happening. They got pissy. I was trying to teach a lesson. Tell me in the morning or afternoon.

Chinese never pay for their shit until the total rings. For example, when I go to the supermarket, I broadly know how much the shit will be, and I will have my money ready or my debit card when the price rings up. Chinese look like dumb deer in headlights and only start digging around for monetary value afterwards. Then there is the goddamned supermarket cards. I so hate those fucking things. These come from America, so it isn't  a Chinese thing, but ALL Chinese have these damn cards. How much this slows the line down at checkout. That is if there isn't all the senseless chattering between the customer and cashier.

Close the door!!!  Most people here for some reason open a door and do not close it behind them. There s one older woman in my school office that just refuses to close the goddamned door behind her. Just leaves it wide open, letting the cold in, or in the summer, the AC out. I once cursed a girl in that same private school as BEEP BEEP BEEP.... because she just refused to close the door behind her after asking nicely to her about ten times.

Squat toilets. I can't use them and I am not going to learn how. I sit when I deficate. Some of the problem comes from that there is not enough space in the room in the first place. I do not like my trousers hitting the floor. I always miss. I do not mean to, honestly, but I always make an ugly mess when I have to go which someone else has to clean up. But have some REAL TOILETS damnit.

No soap and hot water in the school. No AC or heat in the classrooms. Last week, we had two or three days of freezing rain and no sun, and the classrooms are cold enough to hang meat in. Please, it is 2013' have some central air/heat.

Like I said, I love China. I hope to stay here next year and afterwards because this is home to me. But it can be challenging at times.

I'd really like to know what annoys Chinese people when they are outside of China. As far as I can tell they all miss the food but as I see it you can just take any non-Chinese dish and add ginger and soysauce and it will be like any Chinese dish.

I think traffic is the single most annoying thing for me in China. But I read a lot into the fact that people are so careless that they don't learn how to properly operate a car before they start driving among other people. This has something to do with the view on other people as well as the governments lack of care.

Vyborg:

I was wondering about that too. Clean air? Polite people? Organized traffic? I'm gonna ask the question right now.

As for annoying to me, traffic yeah. Just now, riding my bike, a car1 from the opposite direction is confronted with a car2 coming from the right. So car1 decides the left lane is free and drives straight at me while honking. Had to come to an emergency stop since I didn't slow down or move aside so I had his headlights on me when I gave him the finger. Phuck was lucky I didn't carry a baseball bat.

Actually your comment made me recall, when I was in the US meeting chinese people in Chinatown for practice, they still refer to Americans as waiguoren despite the fact they are in the US lol. We're still the foreigners. Really don't know what to say to that.

the fact that 99% of Chinese people talk so much trash about other countries, but if you say the littlest thing bad about China, you are a terrible person.  on top of this, when they talk so much trash about other countries, and you ask them, "oh, you've been to ____?" and they say "no..."

Simple thoughtlessness gets under my skin. On the whole I still have a positive impression of the Chinese, I don't find people to be bad as such, just ignorant or plain stupid. I saw a guy on a bike a while back riding along in front of a midget who was on a little motorcycle, and the guy in front of him was turning, staring, pointing and laughing at him, and he didn't seem to be mocking him, he actually seemed to be smiling at him as one would to a child, but it was so bloody thoughtless, stupid, patronizing and outright offensive that I wanted to hit him. People trying to take pictures of my kid gets my back up too, whether it's innocent or not, but I don't make a big deal out of it as I don't want to encourage him to be self-conscious. And i'm not immune to people gawping at me, but then I do remind myself that apart from being a very superficial concern it's also preferable to the paranoia i'm used to back home where staring is an outright act of aggression. And too many road users drive like f*****g c***s. There's just as much I have something good to say something about too, but that wasn't the question. So yeh.............too many road users drive like c***s.

heiren, waiguorewn, laowai, are you american? (interested more in your nationality than ur name, ask me about my nationality after u have asked what is my name), foot path is just  a design, people never obey them, they always walk through the roadside, cars and motobykes as well do invade the foot path, spitting, constantly staring at someone as if i have never seen this kind of specie in my whole life, taxi drivers eager to take advantage of the so-called laowai, fake things being sold to people at a very expensive price, constantly murmuring and criticizing u in your own presence, always forcing u to eat more than they do whenever u dine with them, discrimination against the black color in general and African in particular, a black musician performing in a nightclub or  anywhere will rather be called heiren biaoyan than his own name or music group name, most Chinese cannot be trusted, heartless people, unable to help their own people when in need like beggars or someone who just suffered an accident,

the list is so so long, am just feeling too lazy to finish it.

Many, many things but I think the worst aspect of China is how the systems don't work particularly well and no-one has either the intelligence or inclination to suggest improvements. The day to day systems affect everyone, whether it is banking, travel, medical, traffic "control" or anything else. Quick example of their stupidity was yesterday at a restaurant with my wife and my brother in laws family.  No-smoking signs are clearly displayed everywhere while two tables down there is a kind considerate Chinese guy chain smoking for all his worth. We complain to the waitress who said she did not know why they had signs and let people smoke. Complained to the manageress and got the same " I don't know".

The completely antisocial and disempowering custom of whoever suggests friends get together for a social occasion, dinner and drinks, has to at the same time foot the bill.

My score is currently somewhere around 350/10.

It's a bloody joke and something needs to be done!

That used to annoy the hell out of me but then it suddenly hit me that I should count my blessings they're not saying 'fuck off' (which they may do in the future). What does still get on my nerves a little though is when people say hello, then laugh like they've just said the funniest thing in the world. A couple of times i've fake burst into hysterics, then cut it off, snap, and given them the most dead-pan look. People are odd.
