Q: What are your thoughts on smoking in a gym?
I like to workout at the gym.Its a Chinese gym and its not to bad for the price.but the one thing that really gets to me is that people smoke inside the gym.the trainers say nothing.
If I see someone smoking I tell them to go outside and smoke.I dont pay to breath in other peoples smoke.
when I do tell them to go outside they laugh.I dont want to die from lung cancer from other people smoking in the gym.
love to hear your thoughts on this.
I teach the kids that smoking has health risks to both the smoker and to the people around the person who is smoking. It also causes pollution. I would look for another gym. But that is just me and This is China. The place where police officers will smoke in front of a NO-SMOKING sign.
you are not going to change their smoking habits, however unpleasant they are to you.
you are only one person and a foreigner.
you have 2 choices:
1) accept that there is going to be smoking and avoid it the best you can
2) find another gym
People smocking next to a "no smocking sign" ? Yeah, and people will fish next to a "no fishing" sign, climb where there is a "no climbing" sign. If you ever mention this, people will have the face-saving smile locked on their face. Welcome to China, listen to the usual excuses for anything ("we are not rich, education was bad until recently"), and don't hurt the feelings.

I know and I understand what you are saying.this is my 2nd gym,and I asked before I joined about smoking and they all told me no one smokes here then they took my money.
the guy that was smoking in the gym on saturday,I went and stood by him and lifted up my sweaty arm pits.

My thoughts about smoking in a gym are the same as my thoughts on smoking in lifts, crowded lifts, resturants, cafes, airplanes, tiny restroom, national parks, temples, trains and in front of childre: It's disgusting.
The thoughts of the Chinese person smoking however are: I want to smoke, so fuck you.
I also don't understand, with air quality this bad, who needs to smoke? Is it a race to see who can get lung cancer the quickest?

What about me with hard seat ticket, traveling 2 days to my destination.
Occasionally I smoke cubans, and next train ride I'll lit one inside the train. I'll suffocate everybody!

Sad for all the innocent non-smokers who get caught in the smoke war... or you can justify it by blaming them for 'enabling' smoking by not collectively speaking up.

Usually, I lit cubans outside. Last time I walked on HK beach at night, I was watching, where does wind come from, and I would lit it at my return, if wrong wind.
I never enjoy anything, if I see other people (or animals) suffer.
My cat would just stare at me, while I was eating. I couldn't eat!
I had to move in my own room, where I could finish my meal! Cat wasn't hungry (bitch), but she could constantly stare at me for some unknown reason.
I am a smoker...I hate being told where or when I can smoke
that said, I don't smoke on the elevator (a little respect) and certainly not when I am exercising and dreaming of the day I manage to quit smoking. I go outside to have a puff when I am at a restaurant...no smoking signs all over the place but they are still smoking I (I don't)....... even my non-smoking family/dinner partners wonder about me... they know it is non-smoking, and wish I would quit,,but they question why I go outside to smoke, Just have it here they say, it's OK. I point to the sign and go satisfy my addiction with a couple puffs.

Fucking outrageous. I would definitely make some noise to management and demand a refund on the spot if they didn't make the asshole step outside to poison himself.
I have been in an elevator and seen a man smoking in it while there was a pregnant woman inside. When I asked him to wait until he left the elevator to smoke he acted like I was being unreasonable and took offense.

While every single point you make is very true. Smoking is one of the TIC situations. Its better in certain larger cities but the fact is, there are hundreds of millions of smokers and the smoking culture is prevalent. It wins out.
You can either accept it, or you can leave and come back in 20 years once people start to try to obey laws. The fact is ( in their eyes) that smoking in that gym is perfectly acceptable, why should they leave? for you? who the hell are you?

My fear is they will never change. There have been many large-scale attempts to improve basic manners, and all have failed.

Sounds like complete bullshit. People go to a gym to better their health and the gym workers should enforce that.
If I were you, I would DEMAND my money back and find another gym. And I would call the people smoking "uncivilized idiots" and they would do nothing about it because I am 10 times stronger than them. Maybe even grab the smoke from his hands.
Why would someone even go to a gym and exercise? So they can work out hard and throw up the tar from their lungs and then fill it back up? Insanely stupid. Some smoke in the locker rooms which is why I do my best to never use them... always seem to be full of middle aged smoking men that check out younger guys and stare at foreigners while looking like weak punks.
A gym is a place where people are forced to stay for a long time to exercise. It's like an elevator, workplace or toilet; you can't really leave if you want to get done what you came for. People who smoke there are beyond inconsiderate. Smoking in a gym takes the rudeness to a level I couldn't even have imagined... People are forced to breathe deeply because they're working out, al the while inhaling your nicotine, tar and respiratory germs. I'm not fond of gym air when there's no smoking, so I shudder to think what it's like when they're also smoking. What's next: Intensive care wards? Nothing surprises me anymore... TIC
Hold on here! I've read the other posts about the smoking issue. Stating that he should gyms, that this China etc etc..
. Let me ask you all one question ~ why do you never see a Chinese guy smoke on the bus??

I think I would rant for a refund is some asshole did that in my gym. Unbelievable.
My gym has the same situation. There are the stairwells, cafe out front, and even a balcony...so naturally, all the Chinese see fit to stand around smoking in the weights section. You see, that way, they can sit on all the weight machines they aren't using while yapping to each other. What could be more perfect?
Chinese aren't just inconsiderate dickheads, they are so competitively. They must envision themselves pushing and shoving their way to the gold medal in the Jackass Olympics. It's the only way I can explain so much of the locals behavior.

I have been trying to get people to stop smoking at the kindergarten I work at,the guards all smoke in front of the children or in the toilet.The powers that be just dont give shit.the guards just say oh this is China well I hate that excuse this is China.it just makes them look stupid even more.
I am from New Zealand and I dont go around saying oh this is New Zealand.
I'm so glad this situation doesn't exist in my gym. Did run into this situation on an outside running track before. There were literally smokers surrounding the track at every corner of the field meaning you caught a whiff every quarter of a lap... I just quit that day.
So far, it only normally occurs in the locker room or in the outer "leisure" areas (my gym has a pool table and some computers set up to entertain kids while their parents exercise). Occasionally, they'll bring a prospective new member through the gym area that insists on smoking. They'll put it out once pointed towards one of the numerous no smoking signs. Wish the fat sweaty slobs who insist on going shirtless would heed the "No Naked" signs
