Was it the culture, the people, the adventure...etc., So what did attract you to come to China in the first place? Were you pleasantly surprised or sadly disappointed by what you had found?
The pandas!
And the 5000 years of history and culture.
And the food.
the foods not that great Panda,,,, I like tigers but never met one yet in China, I have pics of me holding a tiger by the tail and one of me kissing a (real) tiger,,,,parts of China are warmer than Nunavik, I had great time except for the toilet.. hated that
at first it seamed like a good idea at the time
but Im glad I did it
I have a far better life with a family that cares for me and puts up with my shit.
The whole country offers so many things to see and experience
not all of them good
Before coming to China, I had visited nearby countries like Thailand, etc.
When I came for the first time, it was mostly curiosity towards how was life under a communist regime. That was back around 1997. And I was very much surprised and impressed, it was a lot better than Russia. So, I continued to come and learn more. Met some nice local friends, loved the food, the sights, and in general the people, until I ended up living here.
Being a third generation Overseas Chinese all my life and never really learning the language and culture, this was an opportunity to come to China to learn of my roots and witness for myself the transformation of a new world order.
Chopsticks i love them and someone told me the had a sh-tload here.
I have a fetish for fake pieces of jade and the color red.... so it's like eternal bliss here.
I wanted to see if I could handle living in a shithole for a few years.
I figured after a few years in China I know I will go to heaven, as I have already been to hell.
DaBen:
It's ok I think they changed the rules on you anyway. I've been told just living here isn't enough to qualify for heaven anymore.... you have to be a yak herder for at least 9 months as well.
I LOVE CHOU DOU FU!
mattaya:
Doesn't everybody? So the Chou Dou Fu is better in China that's what attracted you to come here. I do agree that the food here is better than where I'm from..
I came with my Chinese wife simply because we couldn't put up with living in the UK any more. It really was a leap of faith for me but having been here seven months now I am really glad I did it. More friends, better social life, better weather, the food is good but I do miss the variety of different countries cuisines that we had back in England; but I don't miss it that much. If I could just get my head around more of the language that would be great. Would I go back to England now? Definite NO.
I was afraid that if I didn't travel, I'd regret it for the rest of my life. I knew that even if it wasn't the best year, it would certainly be interesting, and a story to tell when I'm older.

Mark Twain once said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Welcome to China.
I wanted to see a country that was warmer than Nunavik. I've been to Florida , Islands and Mexico and want a place to go for winters. I did not choose Thailand or Phillippines because of the sex industry. I did not originally know China had one. Actually my whole original perspective of China was wrong. The first thing that struck was the fact that everyone was Chinese. It was so different.
