Q: What is the best (free) media player in China?

It seems that the PPTV media player will open most MV/movies here, but what is the limiting factor. I can use it once or twice and then I have to run the repair on it to open the same videos I played just a minute ago. This repair requires that I be hooked up to the internet which isn’t always do able.
I use the MVs as a reward if the students are well behaved so they get a little pissed if they don’t get their reward. With nearly 60 students in class one must use whatever means possible to keep control.

It depends, if you just want a basic, light, functioning player, VLC is the best. (Efficiency > appearance)

If you want one of those players that allow you to watch streamed movies and stuff, I guess Baidu player or Baofeng are pretty good. But they're slow to open and, like most Chinese softwares, use up a lot of CPU due to cosmetic effects, useless functions, etc. (Appearance > efficiency)

I used to use Baofeng, you can directly find almost anything you want on it. It's pretty useful, but it'll use all your bandwidth. Seriously. ALL OF IT. You can't do anything else that requires the internet if someone's loading a movie on Baofeng. I'm not exaggerating.

I had so many games of DotA ruined by my ex like this... The horror...

Mr_spoon:

In other words, the only reason you should use a Chinese media player is just to watch stuff online.

Otherwise, get VLC.

Ok, but does VLC play flv formatted videos? I have no major problem with the PPTV player except it constantly has to be updated or I have to be hooked up to the internet to play videos on it. If fact I just watched part of a comedy in one class (after updating it ) and in the next class it wouldn’t work at all. The unit was on western humor so what better way than to show a movie, but only if the system works.
