It occurred once to me for a long distance fare from the airport to my apartment. I knew the usual fare to be around RMB 140. When we arrived, the fare was at RMB 800.

I didn't say anything for the whole trip and when we arrived, I asked the driver the price of the fare, he said "800", I asked again, then it went down to "300". Finally, I told him that he has two choices : one, I pay him the normal fare of RMB 140, or two, we call the police and they help us to settle the situation. I paid my 140....

Always ask the "fapiao", take the plate number and the taxi driver's registration number...then you can complain directly to the Taxi central. If proven, he tricked you, he will get a punishment, and you will a refund of the fare.

Scream like a psychopath, threaten to call the police, or to hurt him in some way. Make sure lots of passer-bys hear.

Always get the fapiao. Always.

There are tons of tricks these asshats will use to try and get more money, and WHEN they do, because trust me, they will, the fapiao an possibly help a little.

Although, most times here in China when I have been ripped off, lied to, cheated, etc. the police will almost always side with the Chinese person. Even if the evidence is overwhelming.

Not a problem, I'm usually on top of that kinda thing. If even a turn out of place happens I'll ask him in Chinese where the frig he thinks he's going.

In the past I would bale or fight with the driver, now my language skills are good enough I can tell them in either Cantonese or Mandarin good enough, where I'm going and how I want them to go there (90% of the time I'm taking a Cab someplace I've been before) having said that, truth be told, I take the metro or the bus 97% of the time, I seldom stay out late, I don't go to bars or KTV or anything so.. It saves me lots of aggravation...

If you're not going to make them use the meter (black taxis, long distance, or the small flying dragons) then make sure to agree on the price first. If you know where you're going and you see he's taking the long way, cussing him out in Chinese let's him know your not the average tourist that he can get a quick buck out of. And if all else, just get out.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
