Q: What is up with Chinese employer's obsession with photos?

Why do Chinese employers require a photo along with the job application?

I know that Racial/Gender discrimination are inevitable but this is a little too obvious ... no?

I am always involved in the selection process, so I can give you my input of the matter, kentpul66699. It is our policy to ask for a full body shot in a jogging suit, jumpsuit or a snuggie so I have a general idea of fitness and physical attributes to decide what role she can take during our wacky tuesdays where everyone would dance to their hearts' contempt. I think it's important when a new minion join our company that he/she is quickly integrated to the whole team. Better integration means of course moar productivity.

Right now, we're missing an Irish land whale for the role of the crazy cat lady manager. Of course we don't bring cats in the office for the rehearsals during wacky tuesday lunchtime, but when everything's perfect I already asked for some of the Chinese minions to bring their little kids at work to play the cats for the real thing.

Of course, if we find a Irish land whale that happened to be Chinese but still fit to be the dancing crazy cat lady, of course there would be no discrimination because the wife of Pedro, the Mexican IT guy, used to be a make up artist back in 'Merica. But in the end, my goal is to make the new employee comfortable, thus moar productive. If a candidate would come to me with bad attitude or lack of motivation and dedication to his work, then I wouldn't hire him.

To ease things up for the HR department, I required that they ask for a picture in the resume. It's ok if you're not smiling, you could always be part of the grumpy jazz hand chorus. It's not so bad because you get to wear a prisoner uniform with a tie and a suitcase, but it's not really a major role. The HR team's choreography is the first act finale, so they need to practice moar than my other lesser minions.

What I really want to see is the burning fire in your eyes. You may be local or a Westerner, young or old, woman or man, to me you are only a minion. It's easy to see those who don't, with no will to improve their jazz hands or the duck dance, even when the all chorus don't have to be perfectly synced. If it's obvious the candidate doesn't have what it takes to work for us, hiring it could disrupt the workplace's harmony, which means no moar good productivity.

Racial/gender discrimination is a plague that shouldn't be tolerated.

They ask the Chinese for copies of their ids, which have photos, and they give out photos with resumes anyway, and have you noticed most offices, hospitals, schools, etc have "meet the staff" photo boards?

Of course they want their foreigners to look foreign but it is just a photo-crazy culture anyway.
