You need your passport with several blank pages and an expiration date at least 6 months beyond the end of the visa you’re applying for. You’ll need the Q-2007 application form filled out with either your computer or a black and blue pen and one passport-sized photo.

In addition to these you’ll need a visa notification form issued by the inviting organization (the place you’ll be working). If the entity is a company (and not a public university or government organization), it must have a specified minimum of registered capital and be authorized to employ foreigners.

Applicants also need a work permit issued by the Labor Ministry or Foreign Expert Bureau. In order for an application for a work permit to be approved, the applicant needs to convince the Labor Ministry or Foreign Expert Bureau that (s)he holds the appropriate qualifications and has the required professional background. The applicant also has to pass a medical examination, although this can often be done once you’re in China, before you get your residence permit.

You must already have the visa notification and work permit in hand before you go to apply for a Z visa.

What he/she said above. One add on, please remember what ever job you're applying for isn't something that a local can do. The only jobs available for a Z visa are managers of Foreign Companies or Teachers of a Subject or Language in a Second Language. I've known alot of companies to state otherwise but my foreign friends always end up with a 3 or 6 month business visa or left in the wind

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
