When a chinese man laughs i want to throw him off a bridge. They are robots and have no emotion. Yet if they are looking at a foriegner or the foreigner tells them To fuck off then they laugh their ass off.
Its a face saving mechanism, laugh to stave off the embarrassment. I know it seems they are laughing at you and you want to kill them. Do it at you own risk. While in any other normal damn place in the world. They could expect a punch innthe face for laughing in your face. In china there is no connection at all between laughing in someones face and violence.
You will be treated as a crazy person who attacked him for NO REASON. Of course he will say it was no reason. But so will every other chinese person, including passers by and your friends and most importantly cops. Again. In China, violence doesnt occur when someone laughs in your face. So learn from my continued mistakes.
Catharsis....

Yeah for my mom isn't a ' Naive ' speaker thus I have to learn it by myself instead someone put it into my skull before my birth. I love the way you are digging up and revealing yourself. I feel for you.
Ever read The True Story of Ah Q (阿Q正传) ? Even when Ah Q obviously failed, rather than learning from his mistakes and move on, Ah Q smiles, convince himself he was victorious, a spiritual victory. There's a term for this, which is now a common expression : 阿Q精神, "spirit of Ah Q". Funny enough, this book in the curriculum of Chinese kids since the 80's.
The laugh *can* be a way to avoid embarrassment, a copping mechanism used in an almost automatic fashion. Being angry at somebody who laugh, *you* become the one who loose face, at least in a Chinese mindset.
Yeah, it is annoying but just laugh back at them in a mocking fashion. They shut up pretty good and start looking embarrassed and depressed lol.
You see it only works if one person is angry or criticizing the other and the Chinese person feels nervous, embarrassed, cocky or whatever. If you start laughing at them in a hugely exaggerated and mocking tone, then they continue to lose face... and they sort of stop and just slunk over like a robot that has been short-circuited.
Try it, it's satisfying! Well to the mean ones that are trying to mock a foreigner to show off to their friends.
the answer is,
you paid too much attention on this kind of people...and this annoyed you toooo much...
it made you forgot to notice some chinese people who don't even look at you...let alone a smile...
Do you mean people laughing because they are happy or people laughing at foreigners?
In the first case it does not bother me at all, I am myself a happy person who easily smile and laugh (not to mock people).
In the second case I usually tell them in Chinese to go to brush their teeth (as many people in China, both young and old, have terrible/black/rotten teeth). They always react the same way, stop smiling, look down and walk away in shame.
I don't suggest using violence or swearing at them, just play the game and say something like my e.g. above with "shuaya!" (brush your teeth), Chinese people have very fragile ego and this simple remark will make them feel so ashamed that they will never bother you again.

That is both mean and true.
I would never be able to do that though. It's bad karma. It hurts them. They were not trying to hurt YOU by laughing. They're just responding in that annoying face-saving way. If you hurt them in return, the bad karma's on you.
Hilarious though. What IS it with the teeth? yuck.

Jan: I am not superstitious or religious, I don't believe in karma so whatever. And when people whisper to their friends about the laowai before giggling together they are trying to hurt you. About the teeth many people have bad teeth in China, not because of genetics but because they don't brush regularly even when they have the time and the money to do so, some also rinse their mouth with green tea which makes it worse than not brushing at all.
Maybe they are happy. Heard Or saw something funny. maybe they saw you and think talking monkeys are funny. maybe your problem is you are not. Really, do you have to be A hipster about everything now?
Laughing at me? I find it too rude to let slide. I walk up to them, usually 2 guys, and point at their crouch and use my fingers to show small, then I point at myself and use 2 hands to show large and I laugh at them. I always get silence back.
