Q: What do you think of Chinese pop music?

If you would have listened to Chinese music a few years ago, I think you would agree that the quality was horrible. However, over the last few years, their music has greatly improved. I think this is due in part to the increasing popularity and quality of Korean pop music. I'm not saying they are copying Korea, what I'm saying is that the competition has pushed China to put more money into the industry and it's had some great results. Music videos are interesting, the songs are catchy to listen to. I think that many Chinese pop singers are inspired by foreign artists, especially American ones, but their music still sounds very much Chinese.

I have heard that Chinese aren't creative, but I think that in the music industry, they are allowed to express themselves more fully. Ok, maybe there is a lack of musical variety, such as hard rock. But I think that if music quality continues to improve, and companies are more willing to spend money to promote their artists, perhaps it would become more popular in other countries. I think it would be easier to be more popular internationally if they had something cool like music to share. In my opinion, it has already begun, because look at Jay Chou. He was the main actor in the movie the Green Hornet, and he was awesome. Kpop has already gained popularity worldwide, and I think Chinese pop will be next. What do you think? Do you have any favorite Chinese pop singers? I'm kind of partial to Hangeng myself.

Ugh I know a lot of that old stuff was rhythmless and bland, but you also had a few amazing talents like Teresa Teng and Wang Fei pop up.

I listen to new stuff and it just sounds like an unenthusiastic photocopy of what's good in Korea now, or what was good (or at least transiently popular) in the states 10-30 years ago. Ignoring the bizarrely long-lived Nsync/NKOTB-mania, just today I heard someone mumbling their way through some old new wave song ("translated" creatively with the typical boring "wo ai ni, shuo ai wo" banality), a lame-ass cover of four non-blondes, and what sounded like a Blink 182 song called "oh my gaaaaaad", which was just an excuse to hammer a well-known English phrase into an american-sounding song. I never thought I would have said this a deade ago, but even Blink was more creative than that.

Hey, one of the coolest girl groups I've ever seen...ok, they're Taiwanese. Still, their group image is unique. They all dress like tomboys, I think it is cute. They're called Misster. One of their main songs, Bomb bomb bomb, is a cover of some barely known Korean song, but I find their version to be smoother, and the lyrics have more meaning. Their other main song, Super Lover, is totally original and I think it's really good. They just debuted this year. I know it may be more difficult to find good Chinese singers and bands, but isn't that true for any country?

meh. It sounds all the same to me for the most part. Slow piano intro. Singer with a soft voice. Throw in some English lyrics to appeal to the cool young crowd. bleh.

I don't care for western pop music. I can't imagine I'll be diggin the chinese version. NOW... give me some chinese metal, or punk, or alternative... I don't even know if there really is such a thing... but that's what I'll be checking out.

Oh.. and Chinese bands covering western tunage... I can't wait to find some.

kchur:

Good luck! When you find what you're looking for, prepare for the most unenthusiastic, by-the-numbers covers/slight rewrites you've ever heard. Ain't no auteur theory around these parts.

Some of my favorite covers are the most obscure, blah covers. They are so bad... you HAVE to laugh.

I like a couple of Chinese singers, LeeHom Wang writes really good songs, plays and produce his own music too. Khalil Fong is great too.

The ones that do not sell out themselves to the Korean pop influence are the good ones.

I am a music lover and I have found beauty in almost all styles of music. When i came to China, I was disappointed. Every song sounds pretty much like the other. Artists are not dynamic, do not take chances, and generally uninspiring. That being said, I do like what I hear from Jay Chou. I like Chinese classical artists, both western classical and asian. But this topic is about pop music and it is seriously lacking quality here in my opinion. BTW, the dancing here is at least 10 years behind the times. I can't believe copying Michael Jackson is still popular Shock not to mention breakdancing Puzzled

the music sounds great, as long as you can understand what the lyrics are about. I have studied chinese for five years now including cantonese. I can speak fluent in all. I enjoy Lee Hom , Jay Chou , Eason Chan. I actually did a cover show of Jay Chou a few months back. The Chinese music business is defo better than the western business. Sorry guys thats a fact.

There are many good vocal artists in China, I think there is a good number of songs. Not understanding the lyrics, to me it seems there is only one genre, the romantic pop balad, and they are all kind of the same.

30 years behind, like most things here. I've gone to KTV with my students (we're all 22-24), and it's slow sappy romantic song one after the other. God forbid I try to mix it up with some U2, Aerosmith or Green Day. "Why don't you know Westlife, you're from America!!!!"

brisguy:

The KTV agree with you any song that is western they somehow think you know the lyrics.

Kind off topic but still related to Chinese pop.

Jay Chou being a street busker in LA no one knows him.

The really mainstream stuff is so bad I just want to give myself a bullet when exposed to it for too long. Everything is unoriginal about these pop starlets: the melody, lyrics, style, the whole package. However, there are some really, cool bands that don't get the same amount of air play as the mainstream ones but that are a million times more kick-ass and original. Nova Heart comes to mind as one. They're one of the coolest bands in Beijing at the moment and they really try to be original while at the same time making music that's accessible and enjoyable for most.
