You know, the Mandarin speaking sex symbol himself. I used to see him pop up everywhere in the media though he seems to have been a bit quiet of late. I often hear about foreigners being on the end of comments by taxi drivers regarding how their Chinese is good, but "meiyou Dashan na me hao," though it's never happened to me. Any impressions of the guy?
Seen him on the TV a few times, mostly dressed up some traditional Chinese robe grinning his way through Chinese language learning shows. It's that grin that gets me - it says: "yeah you're Chinese is never gonna be as good as mine mwahahahaha"
His Chinese is better than mine as my Chinese has a southern China accent but his doesn't.Besides,he does not bad as a host.He seems to be a person quite approachable.
He makes those of us with no language skills look bad. If he shows up on TV I will get yelled at for not learning Chinese.
He made a living being the Chinese people's talking pet monkey. I hear the guy is actually alright, but I've been asked to take part in competitions/TV shows and the like and I decline every time. I hate the way the Chinese expect foreigners who speak Chinese to be their fucking clowns. His Chinese is very good, but he still has a slight foreign accent. Your right though, he seems to have disappeared. Probably locked away in his cage in the CCTV building.
GuilinRaf:
It is the Chinese clothes that get to me. Some western girls look great in Chinese traditional clothing, but very very VERY few western men look well in them (I sure as heck dont, and neither does Dashan).
Like xunliang said above, I admire and envy his chinese language skills, I just wish that he was not such a clown.
I was so impressed by his fluent Chinese when I saw him on TV at the first time,It's been a long time ago,I was like OMG,that western guy's Chinese's better than mine.
He seems nice too.
I'm impressed by his fluent Chinese but he sometimes overacts it. He's been a white monkey tamed by Chinese people. Maybe all foreigners who appear on TV have to suck up to Chinese.
I believe that many of them really love China & Chinese culture as they claim on TV but it's not hard to figure out that saying so is a shortcut to becoming popular with Chinese audience & rich.
There's another lady named Maria from Sierra Leon. Every time I see her on TV she reassures the audience of her unconditional love for China. I really want to ask, "What about your country? Do you love it as much as you love China?"
Those guys just say what Chinese want to hear & that does the trick.
This would have to be the billionth thread written about Da Shan. I think it's pretty appalling to characterize him as a foreign "clown" or "monkey", particularly when by all accounts he's quite a nice guy and has worked damn hard to perfect his Chinese. Personally, on TV, I have found him to be quite likeable and something of role model in learning Chinese language and culture.
