I've taught high school classes for a little while now, and kept in touch with quite a few students. Many have gone on to pass the gaokao and go to universities, often writing back to me.
I've had a select few going abroad for university, but the vast majority of them staying in China. And almost all the ones I still talk to have been incredibly dissatisfied with university. Happy to get a lot of free time, yes, but hating their field of study, which they often were forced to take.
Have any of you teachers gotten feedback from your students on their post-gaokao lives?

The ones I've spoken to were happy with the field they went into. They had enough time to decide for themselves and nobody was really forced to do anything. I guess there are two different situations but the students I had were satisfied with their post gaokao life.
I would say that a third of my students are happy with their chosen careers (airlines), another third are unhappy and the other third had no discernable ambition.
My students were mostly those who failed the university entrance exams and thus ended up at a vocational college. It was interesting to see who felt badly about not getting into university and worked their tails off to succeed and those who simply couldn't care less.
An accreditted university that had ties with my previous college was full of students who didn't seem to care about their post-university life because they would receive their degrees regardless...which, of course, is going to lead to their heightened sense of entitlement when they start looking for jobs.
I know so many of them who jump from job-to-job because "It's too boring," or, "It's too much work."
