Q: What does china do to combat drugs?

Whatever they do it works. I never saw any junkies in china. I'm back in the uk and they are everywhere. Loud threatening, emotionally unstable shouting at each other in the street. Makes you wonder if democracy has all the right answers. If china ships them off to labour camps or locks them up for good, and it makes the streets way better for hard working people, good on them.

Nah, don't give them so much credit...it's mostly just simple economics.

Drugs are at best the same price here they are in the west, if not significantly more.

In the west you can support a drug habit, at least for a while, on minimum wage/govt support. It's not pretty but it's doable.

Here the type of people who are most vulnerable to becoming the kinda degenerate junkies you are talking about couldn't possibly afford it. One night's worth of coke or a weekend's worth of bud is going to be 25% of their gross income for that month so it just doesn't happen at a large scale.

I'm sure it does happen and the penalties are harsh...but just think how hard it would be to keep up a drug habit here on <2000/mth...where it's a problem it'll tend to be more of a problem with the unemployed children of the wealthy.

RiriRiri:

Whoa whoa, you forget about prostitutes and robbers. This really gets ugly down there.

Drugs are just like anything else here: pricey for a decent quality, but you can get really, really low on both requirements and believe me it's also a big issue for the unemployed lower classes here. Junkies are a dream workforce for petty businesses.

Metamphetamine is on raise big time (it's easy to produce discretly, it becomes affordable to lower middle class people), and ketamine is the new cool thing for the rich kids. Never heard of the Boshe village, where the whole village is producing metamphetamine and that authorities never dared/cared to clamp on for a long time ?

You can send junkies to break rocks on an island, you will have broken rocks and broken people... If you have a society without safety nets and no hopes to become self-sufficient, no hopes for you kids future well-being, etc. You have a society with junkies, because a fraction of desperate people will jump on drugs to forget the bad dream that is their life. Some do alcohol, some do meth, same thing. Sending junkies to jail does not fix the problem, it does not stop the mechanism that build junkies in the first place. Usually, the same mechanism also produce drug cartels...

Sounds like a euro-commie to me!

no safety net is the best safety net, even if it costs more to put these people in prison than to give them good options in the first place, it is WRONG to give those freeloaders options.

Why, if they were only hardworking and brilliant like me they wouldn't need to go to prison.

No...better  to give them prison.

That's the americansad way.

coineineagh:

Yup. Lots of immature people in dire need of more mollycoddling than they deserve, and getting nothing but punishments. China either doesn't pay attention to the lessons learned in the west (apathy, ignorance), or it wants its people to be drug-infested, self-obsessed and malleable like putty in their leaders' hands (control). Both reasons are entirely in keeping with what I know of the Party.

Being in the "drug business" is punishable by death in China. Not sure that people care much about the being put to sleep though. The will to live is just so low in many people.

controlling the borders goes a long way in curbing drug use in china, sadly most countries do a very poor job at this, never mind the politics and morality questions, if the drugs dont get in then you only have to deal with domestic suppliers, with cameras everywhere and people everywhere, its almost like self monitoring for the greater good. not a fan of this but it is the reality of china.

400 tons of meth ingredients destroyed

I am guessing there would be at least one other place in China where drug manufacturing on large scale takes place.
