means a lot of things....  that's why it is useful AmE.  You have to get used to tuning in to context.  That is, it's not so much what they say, as how they say it.  But for a simple answer, cute as far as a girls looks is a term more used by other girls (I think).  I mean guys don't call girls 'cute'.  Guys call girls:   good looking; pretty; Hot;  or if u r from the 80's ....  Smokin'        

As for me Cute is someone whom you want to tease till death)) just because you like him. Examples - cat, baby, young naive and not ugly  Chinese lady or even pink bike.

If I say a girl is cute, it means she is Japanese cartoonish sweet looking.  She is not sexy and doesn't make me think whether shes the one I would wanna spend the rest of my life with, but she is someone who caught my attention, perhaps by style or natural looks.  On the other hand, if I say a girl is cute, that means the door is open for me to want to at least talk to her and get to know her.  Cute is a positive thing to say, without being too obvious.

If I tell a girl she's cute, what I really mean is that she's hideously ugly, but I don't want to hurt her feelings. If I'm dating the girl, I will tell her she's beautiful to avoid... stuff.

If I say a baby is cute, I mean it. All babies are cute, even so-called ugly ones.

If I say "That's cute" in a sarcastic tone, it means you're an idiot.

"What a cute puppy"  = a puppy that looks in a way that makes you want to play with it and hug it

"What a cute baby" = a lie said to parents of a newborn despite all babies looking the same, some slightly ugly. 

"She has got acute angina" does not mean she has nice looking female sex parts.
