Even in grocery stores that specialize in imports, its tough to find things like; ranch dressing, chex snack mix, pretzels, etc.
The only fast-food I miss is Chick-fila and sports bars with Buffalo chicken sandwiches on the menu, the type they douse in tabasco sauce.
CHIPOTLE !!!!!!!!!!
lchickman:
really ? this deserved a thumb down ? From who , a Qdoba employee ???
real pizza real hot dogs real steak real burgers mmmmmmmmmmm burgers
My grandma's apple pie and peach cobbler and formerly red beans and rice, but my gf just cooked some last night. Delicious.
Pepper laced and salted, smoked cured venison, ham and gator!
nachos, fish tacos, fresh salmon, kraft dinner, real bread, real cheese and real crackers...mmmm....why am I hungry now?
Chic-fil-A! Lol! When I went back to the States in July (2011), I visited my parents in Atlanta. They said, "What would you like to do?" and the answer of absolute-things-to-do was 'stop by a Chic-fil-A' resturant.
Other than that, a great apple pie, homestyle fried chicken, mashed potatoes, good Greek food, buffalo wings (3 mile island hot!), and anything baked in an oven (casseroles, real cakes, etc.).
markferrer:
another ATL guy. We can get some peanut oil and open our own fake Chick-fila here. haha
for me its just home cooked food. You can find pretty much anything you want here in Beijing....except good fresh seafood.
Man, what I would do for a nice, fresh piece of barramundi......
well as most of the foreigners can get some western foods here like a sunday roast or bangers and mash. the one thing i can not find here is "corned beef" because i am really missing corned beef mash!
carnse asada tacos. fish tacos. burritos. hell anythig that the local taco stand back home has.
Xpat.John:
Come to Guangzhou. There is a Irish bar that serves great tex-mex tacos, enchiladas, burritos, etc...
Sweet plantains, mofongo, lechon, etc...overall Latin Puerto Rican/Cuban food seems to be non-existent in Beijing. :(
Thought i'd revive this thread as we all miss food from home.
I miss real sausages, grans apple crumble, trifle, sunday roast, yorkshire pudding, gravy, caramac chocolate, fish and chips, salad cream, marmite.
What do you guys miss?
Haggis.
Rin:
I remember reading my uncles old Beano annuals when I was a kid. They would always draw the haggis as a little flying pig like animal with bat wings and a kilt. I always thought a haggis was an animal!
mike168229:
That's what we tell all the tourists. (shhhhh... don't let the secret out!)
MissA:
My in-laws were deeply disappointed when we first met and they tried to play the 'hunting haggis joke' on me and I didn't fall for it.
Cereal!! You can probably get this is bigger cities but not in mine
mike168229:
I found that there is a Chinese snack in the crisp aisle that is exactly like sugar puffs back home (the one with the honey monster). They are just fine with cold uht milk.
Give that a shot, I have them when I am reluctant to spunk 50RMB on a box of proper stuff.
well,,,, where I grew up used to be Mexico..... soooooo,,,, proper Mexican food.... perfect tortilla chips (rare, but a treat when u find !), guacamole, pico de gallo, perfect salsa (again , hard to find, but worth it when u do!)
Tons of stuff: kebabs when i'm staggering home late after a night on the piss; fish and chips when i've been out drinking with mates; late night curries after a pub crawl.
Oooh, and decent lager.
Really and truthfully it's variety that I miss. Being able to walk down one street each night of the week and never eat the same thing twice. Indian, Chinese, Italian, Thai, Greek, you name it. Variety is the spice of life. Plus i'd shoot a perfect stranger in the face to have one of my mum's Sunday roasts for a change. Oh, and Walker's crisps.
Ackee and saltfish and sour sop juice.Oh, yes! And avocado pear.
tsonj:
Jerk chicken and fry dumblings...oh, yea, I forgot...I'm vegetarian now.
chicken gumbo, jumbalaya, real corn bread, real butter, grits, real Southern Fried Chicken, real Jack Daniels
